Council Minutes of 8/20/2002
present on our school buses. The committee was informed and educated to the fact that
school buses aze one of the safest vehicles available. Because of the construction and the
way they aze made with the seats being soft cushions and because of the speed that they
travel, our children aze safe and seat belts are not required by the State of Ohio. Other
questions were answered and resolved. Mr. Dailey raised some questions that she intends
to look into about the percentage of tickets that were issued in North Olmsted over the
past few yeazs with regard to safety belts and whether or not they were punishable by
fines or classes to be attended. Any related North Olmsted Police Department
information will be obtained and preserved back to the committee and to all of Council
and legislation will most likely be discussed at that time. Thank you to all of Council for
being present at this evening's meeting and to the guest presenters.
Councilman Miller, chairperson of the Intra-Governmental Relations and Legislation;
Long-Range Planning Committee: 1) The committee met this evening at 6:30 p.m. In
attendance were committee members Gareau, Kasler and Miller. The purpose of the
meeting was to discuss the appointment of Anna Kanis to the Recreation Commission to
finish the term previously held by Mr. Axel Hoyer who resigned. The term expires on
12/31/05. Mrs. Kanis is an active member in the North Olmsted Hockey Club. She
currently holds the position of secretary for the North Olmsted Hot Stove League and is
also active in the North Olmsted Soccer Organization. As a first grade teacher in North
Ridgeville, she has participated in both Safety Town and Safetyville in North Ridgeville.
The committee discussed the issue of attendance at meetings, which lately has been a bit
of a challenge, and the problems presented by not having a quorum for the commission
meetings. Mrs. Kanis did not feel she would have a problem with attending the meetings.
When asked what she felt was one of the most important things about Hot Stove, she
complimented the Hot Stove organization as they aze truly dedicated to the children.
The committee felt very comfortable with Mrs. Kanis being placed on the Recreation
Commission and unanimously recommended her approval. Councilman Miller moved
that Council appoint Mrs. Anna Kanis to the Recreation Commission. The motion was
seconded by Councilwoman Kasler and unanimously approved. Councilman Miller said
the committee, all of Council and the Mayor appreciate Mrs. Kanis' willingness to serve.
Councilman Gareau, chairperson of the Recreation Committee commented, in light of the
circumstances regarding the finances in the City of North Olmsted, he thought it might
be a good time for City Council to contact the various athletic organizations in the city,
such as the North Olmsted Softball Association, the North Olmsted Soccer Organization
and Hot Stove. He would like to bring them before City Council and the Recreation
Commission to discuss their needs, their concerns and what exactly the city, as a
community, provides to them. He hopes to create a dialogue directly with City Council
so that representatives from each can come in for a meeting just to have a chance to sit
down and get to meet the represenrtatives of government and at the same time present
their concerns and needs for the future.
8
x~~.
~L
