Council Minutes of 5/21/2002 <br />4) In light of current events regazding terrorist attacks in the United States, Police Chief <br />George Ruple is attending a homeland security conference in Columbus on Wednesday <br />and Thursday. The U. S. Department of Justice sponsored the conference designed for <br />law enforcement personnel. <br />5) On May 16, a presentation was given by the city's K-9 unit, consisting of patrol dogs <br />Rico and Boyka. These dogs aze trained to be aggressive/alert dogs. They will scratch <br />at the odor of narcotics, and they are also trained to bazk and hold, versus the traditional <br />find and bite. An excellent demonstration was given regarding how the dogs work in <br />terms of criminal apprehension. One of ow patrol officers put on a very heavily padded <br />suit and the dogs were trained on verbal command to attack and also to attack and hold <br />and to hold and bazk. The dogs were put through an article seazch and a building search <br />for narcotics. It was an excellent display of obedience by the animals. <br />6) Three DARE graduations have been held in the past week, including Butternut School, <br />St. Brendan's and the first graduation at Chestnut School. Together, over 180 fifth grade <br />students participated in the Drug Abuse Resistance Education classes. <br />7) The Fire Department accepted delivery of the new fire engine which will be housed at <br />Station 1, and the engine currently in use at Station 1 will be moved to Station 2. The <br />new engine will be featured in the Memorial Day parade. <br />8) The Memorial Day pazade will start at 10:30 a.m. in the pazking lot adjacent to the bus <br />gazage. Everyone is invited to participate in the pazade. <br />9) The Rec Center held summer registration on Saturday, May 11, and registration <br />income exceeded the total for the yeaz 2001. <br />10) The skatepazk celebrated its first anniversary on May 12. <br />11) Springvale hosted a very successful Mother's Day brunch. Anew record was set <br />with over 600 diners enjoying the brunch. <br />12) On Thursday, May 16, he installed the new officers of the North Olmsted Chamber of <br />Commerce. The new president is our North Olmsted librarian Donna Meyers. <br />13) On Saturday morning, May 18, he participated in the opening day ceremonies for the <br />Hot Stove Baseball League. Unfortunately for the first time in memory, no baseball <br />games were played because of the soggy field conditions. <br />14) On May 20, he was privileged to participate in the Middle School's Government <br />Day. Congressman Dennis Kucinich spoke in the morning on national issues. He and <br />State Represenrtative Sally Conway Kilbane made presentations to classes on state and <br />municipal issues. <br />With regazd to the K-9 unit, Councilman Nashaz asked the Mayor if a third dog would be <br />purchased so that all three shifts can be covered. Mayor Musial replied budget restraints <br />prevent that at this time, but it is certainly under consideration. <br />Regarding the Middle School Government Day, President O'Grady noted that in addition <br />to Congressman Dennis Kucinich, State Representative Sally Conway Kilbane and <br />Mayor Musial, Judge Donna Congeni Fitzsimmons of the Rocky River Municipal Court <br />held the sentencing phase of her court at the Middle School. It was a great day for the <br />students and very educational. <br />2 <br />
