Council Minutes of 5/21/2tN12 <br />• The issue of contract legislation was scheduled to be discussed. However, due to the <br />lateness of the how and the fact that there was no pending related legislation, it was <br />agreed that this would be discussed at the next committee meeting. <br />Councilman Gareau, chairperson of the Recreation, Public Pazks and Buildings <br />Committee: 1) The Recreation Commission met on May 20 at the Recreation Center. <br />The agenda items were as follows: <br />• A presentation by Pat Cunningham, the tennis supervisor for the city. Mrs. <br />Cunningham commented that the program is growing and is currently looking for <br />additional ways to improve customer satisfaction. One of the program advancements <br />done in the past few years was what she called the "little munchkin program" <br />designed to introduce 4 to 6 year olds to the sport. The children have half hour <br />training sessions. There is also a match play program for interested teens which has <br />been a success, and a travel team for junior development that is in place and thriving. <br />Mrs. Cunningham indicated and reports that the four tennis courts at the Rec Center <br />are now regularly 85% full. However, there is some limited time available provided <br />that interested persons would call seven days in advance. Mrs. Cunningham is <br />pleased with the progress at the Rec Center, including fixing of the always-present <br />roof leaks over the tennis courts. She did point out that the biggest need at this time <br />is for an additional court as five aze required for competitions and we have only four. <br />• Recreation Commissioner Todd Morgan discussed recent goings-on at the Rec <br />Center. A general sign-up day for registration for upcoming activities generated <br />$21,000 in registration fees, which was higher than last year's $16,000. On May 11, <br />the diamond skills program for baseball players was held. This is a competition to <br />test the skills with winners advancing to local and regional finals. The ever-famous <br />fishing derby was held again this yeaz. The lake was well stocked and the event was <br />attended by several hundred children. A special thank you goes to the Sportsman's <br />Club for helping out in that event. May 18 was Hot Stove opening day. It was a <br />great time although it was a rain out for the first time. <br />• Mr. Morgan mentioned that an ice show will be held May 31 through June 2 at the <br />Recreation Center. <br />• All Scouts Weekend is June 7, 8, 9. <br />• The Fourth of July bike parade will be held again this year at City Hall on the <br />morning of the Fourth of July. <br />• The tennis courts, gymnastics azena, ice rink and concessions will be closed on <br />Tuesday, June 4, to accommodate the electrical repair at the Rec Center. The pool <br />will remain open with the assistance of a diesel generator to continue water filtration <br />for safety issues. <br />• With the suggestions from the Rec Commission, final plans have been prepared for <br />the construction of the horseshoe pits, the tennis courts and basketball courts at the <br />park. A bid should be going out soon with construction hopefully sometime this <br />summer. <br />• Ball diamond # 2, the lighted diamond at the pazk, will see the installation of a 6 to 8 <br />foot home run fence 315 feet from home plate. The $5,000 cost will be a donation <br />`~;:~ from NOSA, the softball association. <br />8 <br />
