Council Minutes of 5/8/2002
this extension was approved in November of 2000. However, the change has not
been made. The request was to extend the zone to 300 feet from the school property
line as opposed to the present 100 to 1S0 feet. Discussion ensued, and it was
determined that with the new light proposed at Driscoll, it would make sense to have
a school zone designated beyond that point. However, that would extend the zone to
376 fee, which is outside the legal limits. It was determined, however, that we could
post advance notice school zone metal signs 3S0 feet in advance of the school zone
designations in the street. This would take those signs south of Driscoll, which would
address the concern that a school zone should be noticed prior to the light and school
crossing at Driscoll. Mr. IVIiller asked that changes be made immediately in the
interest of the safety of the children who cross at Pine School on Dover. The
administration stated that the project was designated to be part of the Driscoll light
installation. Mr. Miller contended that there are two different projects and that
approval for extending the zone was given in 2000 and the Driscoll light will not be
installed immediately and the issue of designating a safe area for children who cross
Dover is extremely important and should be attended to immediately. He contended
that advance signs could be placed immediately and that extending the school zone is
a project independent of the light installation. After much discussion, it was agreed
between the administration and Council that immediate action would be taken to post
advance metal signs within the legal limit and that the street school zone designation
would be changed to its further legal limit.
• Mrs. Kasler moved that Council have no objection to the Dl liquor license permit for
Sammi's Deli on Brookpark extension. The motion was seconded by Mr. Miller and
passed unanimously.
AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION
President O'Grady asked that Police Officers Wagner and Roman come forward with K-9
officers Rico and Boyka for a presentation by Ms. Sue Gundich, president of the North
Coast Humane Society. Ms. Gundich said that in 1999 the North Coast Humane Society
began to look at K-9 officers and the needs of their communities. It was discovered that
the K-9 officers needed added protection in the form of bullet proof vests. Since 1999,
the Humane Society has donated vests to K-9 officers, and she is in attendance this
evening to donate numbers S7 and S8 to Rico and Boyka. The vests are custom-made for
each dog and weigh approximately 8 to 12 pounds. (Officers Wagner and Roman placed
the vests on Rico and Boyka.) Officer Wagner noted that the dogs are approximately 2
1/2 years old and come from Holland. He thanked Ms. Gundich and expressed the city's
appreciation for the donation of the vests and said that the vests probably could not have
been purchased as they are so costly-each one costs about $800 to $900. Ms. Gundich
explained that the vests are made by Second Chance and are completely guaranteed.
Should they be damaged in the line of duty, they are replaced totally free of charge.
President O'Grady expressed the thanks of the city to Ms. Gundich and asked her to relay
those thanks to the members of the Humane Society.

S
