Council Minutes of 4116/2002
additional events that benefit the community, how to interact more with private
groups. She also discussed creating new programs. Her presentation was more of a
brain-storming activity. It included everything from pool renovations to frog jumping
earnests and a trout fishing derby to be held in the outdoor swimming pool. The
commission appreciated Ms. Andrew's presentation and looks forward to further
updates on her progress.
• Mr. Scan preserned the Hot Stove case to the commission. The commission voted
unanimously to approve the fee waiver for Hot Stave for a period of five years
commencing 2002.
• The recreation capital improvements list has been narrowed down. There will be two
new outdoor tennis courts that will be added at a cost of approximately $57,000. The
old courts, which are near the baseball diamonds, will be demolished by city
employees and will be graded and seeded in late spring or early summer. The
basketball courts will have a restriping and a new asphalt top. The original proposal
to tear them out and have them commercially reinstalled was determined to be cost
prohibitive. The work will be done in-house for under $5,000. The horseshoe pits
will be reconfigured to accommodate the new tennis courts, and the cost is reasonable
to reconfigure them. Mr. Morgan indicated that the bleachers at the pool will be
replaced. The current bleachers are a telescoping bleacher as they slide out from the
wall. But they were not designed to handle the high humidity of a pool environment,
and they are deteriorating. They're also capable of allowing children to slip through
the footrest and a seat because there are no backs where one's heel might otherwise
hit. The new bleachers will take care of that so it won't be a problem. We should
expect to see action on that in the next few months.
• Summer recreation program sign up is May 4 at 9 a.m. on the tennis courts. It is
usually a large turn-out, so people should arrive early.
• May 19 will be the annual fishing derby at Burns Lake in Westlake off of Bradley
Road. This is a program done in the past in cooperation with the Sportsman's Club.
• There is a possibility that a new co-ed adult soccer league will be started. Further
details will be forthcoming.
• The automatic defibrillator issue has been addressed. The device is now mounted on
the wall in the first aid room at the R~ Cerner. It's in a box and is wired with an
alarm. There is a sign demonstrating how it is to be used, and Mr. Morgan indicated
that there would be notices posted throughout the Rec Centel' advising people where
to find the unit. The City of North Olmsted received a communication from the
family of Mr. Bernard Ward, the gentleman who passed away on March 8 at the Rec
Center from heart failure. The family characterized the issue of the AED's
availability and use as anon-issue. The family did express gratitude to the staff at the
Rec Cerner and the paramedics for their conduct and a sincere appreciation that Mr.
Ward was not alone when he passed away and that people were attempting to help
him. They signed the letter, "thank you far your caring actions."

8
