Council Minutes of 4/15/2003
Charles Dial, 27959 Gardenia.
^ Spoke about security at the Rec Center. He is a regular visitor there and, after hearing
that people are looking into getting better computer security, he thinks computer
security is far down on the list over there. They need some kind of basic surveillance
and feels funding should be available for some kind of a minimum installation like
one or two TV cameras and tape recorders.
Councilman Gateau explained that he was not speaking about securing computers. It was
more along the lines of using computers to increase and enhance security at the Rec
Center by using them as a means to control and begin to keep track of who is in the
building. The basic idea is that you need to know who is in your building--control
ingress and egress and have people check in and identify who they are. Mr. Dial said
those points were well taken and he appreciated them. On the topic of computer security,
he believes there may be some security flaws in the city's network system as he checked
out the computers at the Senior Center.
Dennis Lambert, 25057 Carey Lane
^ The issue of leaf pick-up is of interest to him. He doesn't know what the city paid
last year for leaf pick-up, but believes it was about $120,000 a couple of years ago.
Finance Director Copfer said the cost was $159,000. He believes city employees
should be used to do leaf pick up. We have city workers who need the work, and they
are willing to do the work. We should follow the example of Rocky River as they are
able to pick up the leaves in a week, and they get around the city several times.
Janet Dorn, 30990 Bradley Road
^ With regard to the leaf pick-up, on her street there never was a first pick-up. She had
a lot of leaves out, and they were not picked up. She called City Hall and left a
message with the Service Dept. and never heard anything further.
Marvin Stotz, 6657 Bretton Ridge Drive
^ Still feels there is a security and safety problem at the Rec Center. Last week, the
police were called to investigate a suspicion person but could not respond quickly
enough because it was a shift change and there were no patrol cars available.
^ Appreciates the new Rec Commissioner but feels patrons need easier access to his
office.
^ Years ago, an elderly gentleman tried to work with Council to get shuffleboard
courts. He did research, but the Mayor was fighting with Council and shuffleboard
courts never came. He has just given up. This speaks volumes as to where we have
been as a city and where we are as a city.
^ He asked Mr. Nashar the status of the abandoned home on Chadbourne that he had
brought up at the last Council meeting. Mr. Nashar said that the Safety Director is
looking into it. He is investigating who owns the property. If the bank is responsible
for the property, the city will send out a notice to have them clean it up
^ Asked the total cost of the Stearns/Crocker project. President O'Grady said he
believed the cost was about $4 million. Finance Director Copfer and Mr. Limpert
said they thought the total cost for North Olmsted would be around $2.4 million out
14
