Council Minutes of 12-21-2004
the entire county. North Olmsted is more than just an extraneous administration. North
Olmsted really supports RTA in many ways that need to be recognized. It just is
inappropriate that RTA would demand further subsidization of their system through
North Olmsted as the city more than pays for its share of the system. Members of
Council and the Mayor are exercising their fiduciary responsibility in standing up for
NOMBL. NOMBL is a very important asset of this city, and Congressman Kucinich
understands that. Congressman Kucinich was on city council back in the 1970's when
the Cleveland Transit System was negotiating with a new transit authority to cede over
that system to this new authority. He was on the negotiating team as the vice chairman of
the Transportation Committee. He understands how transit systems work; he understands
how these mergers work. And he also understands that some of the suburban systems
such as Shaker Hts. went to the regional authority willingly. Other systems did not go
willingly or did not go at all, including North Olmsted and Maple Hts. There is nothing in
the agreement that formed RTA or in any pertinent authority that would require North
Olmsted to join that against the will of its people. Congressman Kucinich stands 1,000%
behind and with the people of North Olmsted to protect its bus line and protect its asset.
He is pleased that RTA in its wisdom extended the negotiating period for three months.
During this time, the Congressman will be working with the Mayor and Council and local
president Whiting and Law Director Dubelko to do the things that are necessary to stand
up for the people of North Olmsted in protecting their bus line.
Dennis Lambert, 25057 Carey Lane, feels that NOMBL will be an integral part of any
future expansion plans of this city. This is an asset that needs to be preserved for this
community's future. Regarding the report about the presentation from Dr. Stank and the
school board, he noted that Dr. Stank is a very bright man and his savvy nature has kept
the school system going. He respects him and praises him, but he does say to beware.
His concern is taking from Peter to pay Paul and from Paul to pay Peter. One of projects
referred to during the presentation was acity/school athletic facility. As many on
Council know, if you want to do an event in a school building, there are extreme costs to
doing events after hours-including liability, keeping the school open, additional costs to
the school system regarding utilities, etc. The funds to pay these costs would have to
come out of the already strapped recreation budget.
Janet Saringer, 23336 Stoneybrook Drive, has been reading in the paper about a possible
proposed development on south Clague. If it ever does come before this Council, she
would like to remind Council what effect it would have on a property closer to I-480.
There is a property owner who has been trying to develop backland on Brendan and have
a street come out on Clague Road. The city has been fighting this and opposed it for
many years as long as she can remember.
Charles Dial, 27959 Gardenia, is concerned about Mrs. Copfer's comments noting the
historical society had authorized the one-time records destruction. She certified in the
RC1 and RC2 that there's no public records request outstanding against any of those
records. He would like to remind her that sometime back he did make a public records
request-a blanket one against all of those records to protect them from destruction until
the other public records request he has is taken care of. That's the one for the machine
10
