Council Minutes of 9/28/2005
packages, for the use of our military people who are deployed for extended periods, or to
those who are recuperating in US military hospitals, continues until Veterans' Day,
November 11. We have two boxes collected and ready for shipment. If interested in
donating, please drop your items with Director John Dailey in our Human
Resources/Community Life Services Department.
2. Recent Actions in response to the Rain event of August 20, 2005: In cooperation with
the City of Westlake, the North Olmsted four person maintenance main ditch crew hauled
approximately 200 ton of debris out of the Hall Ditch. This work covered approximately
500 ft. by 25 ft. of ditch. Prior to the storm, we had gone through the Hall ditch and
provided routine maintenance. Even though the ditch is in Westlake, it is water that
drains out of our city. The city had weed whipped the foliage out of the ditch, but with
all the sediment there, it just grows right back. After the recent rain events the crews
immediately removed all debris from strategic locations throughout the city's main
ditches. The following main ditches have been weed whipped: Revere Dr., Nantucket
Dr., LeBern Dr., Esther Ave., Claque Rd. south of Lorain, Lansing Dr., Danberry Dr.,
Ambour Dr., Blossom Bivd., and Delmere Dr. The crew has cut up and removed trees
and limbs from the following areas: Root Rd., Alexander Rd., McKenzie Rd., Cypress
Dr., Noreen Dr., Windsor Dr., North Park Dr., and Dorothy Dr. The five person sanitary
systems crew has cleaned 1.8 miles of sanitary sewer mains since August 20. The crew
has also responded to 31 residential sanitary sewer complaints. Much of the sewer main
cleaning was performed in the Carsten, Driscoll, Williamstown area, and nothing out of
the ordinary has been found. The WWTP has purchased a new pan and tilt zoom camera
with all wheel drive transporter at a cost of approximately $25,000. We expect to have
the camera ready for use by November. This equipment will help our crews be more
efficient and effective while cleaning sewers, etc. They have also contracted with the
weather alert company, Notify, in hopes that response time can be improved.
3) Departments:
• Human Resources/Community Life Services:
The Senior Center is holding an Art Show this Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Seniors have created works of art for display and for sale. Everyone is invited to attend.
A housing update was conducted to provide data for emergency usage. This
information has been provided to the U. S. Conference of Mayors and the Mayors &
Managers Association of Cuyahoga County to assist with Katrina relief as needed.
Working in conjunction with the North Olmsted City Schools and the Chamber of
Commerce, we are continuing to gather check and cash donations for the hurricane
Katrina relief fund. Checks can be made out to the American Red Cross and dropped off
at the Human Resources/Community Life Services Department.
• Personnel & Administrative Services:
All 40 of the new computers are up and running on the new server. All city
computers are now using the new server. All the data on the Novell server has been
backed up and moved to the new server.
Beginning October 3, all administrative/clerical personnel will be attending a
series of 5 computer classes covering the basics of Windows. Dennis Barto, the city's
computer consultant, will be conducting the classes
2
