Council Minutes of 6-7-2005
recreational programs and facilities and make the best use of the land that is available.
The committee voted 2-0 to recommend approval of Ordinance 2005-86.
Councilman Miller thanked everyone for their thoughtful expressions of sympathy on the
recent passing of his father. It meant a great deal to him and was a support to him and his
family during this difficult time.
Councilman Miller, Chairperson of the Public Safety, Health & Welfare Committee: 1)
One of the local weekly papers recently ran an article that North Olmsted is the only site
state-wide of a "booze inhaler" at one of our local watering holes. It is a machine that
mists alcohol, and it passes through your blood stream at a faster rate than if it were going
through your stomach and other organs. He suggested Council read the article and start
formulating some thought about this because there is a battling brewing about whether or
not this should be outlawed. At this time, such machinery is legal, but there is a
movement afoot to ban such machinery.
Councilman Miller, member of the Recreation Commission: 1) The meeting was held
last evening. The following items were discussed:
• Indoor pool. The roof has been determined to be safe although reinforcement plans
are necessary for the winter load, and it is anticipated that the pool may be closed
again approximately two to three days in late August.
• The outdoor pool. The commission is thankful to the Service Dept. for their quick
response. The job there in rebuilding much of the deck and wall is about 75%
complete. The anticipated opening of the pool is June 27 as opposed to the normal
June 8. Various lessons and packages are being prorated, discounted or doubled up to
accommodate the lessons that aze necessary. It is anticipated these repairs will buy at
least five years lifetime for the outdoor pool. The costs aze being picked up out of the
General Fund. There was a minimal financial impact with the shutdown of the pool
since operating the pool is so labor intensive between the maintenance issues and
lifeguards.
• The DJ skate has improved over the last three years. There were 37 Friday night DJ
skates in 2003, approximate attendance was 7,000 with revenue of $44,000. In 2005,
there were only 33 nights due to the holidays falling on Friday nights. However,
attendance was up to 8,500, and the income was up to $58,000. This is attributed to
abetter product, better organization, better supervision. The management is there, on
hand and responsive. They are interacting with the parents' concerns, and it's a better
product for our youth.
• The annual Fourth of July bike decorating contest and parade will be held on the
holiday. All of Council and city officials are invited to join in both judging the bike
decorations as well as helping at the park with cooking and other activities.
• The ice show was a financial success this year. The income was $1,700.03 after all
expenses were paid. It is a very entertaining show, and it is unfortunate that more of
the community doesn't know about it. Mr. Limpert had suggested putting a video of
previous shows on the cable channel so that the community can see what it is all
about. This would be a good and very inexpensive way of promoting such a value.
• The issue of water fountains was brought up, which the Mayor has reported on.
8
