Council Minutes of 3/21/2006
with local access signage placed on the barricades. This would allow two-way
traffic with local access restriction. A lengthy discussion ensued with debate of
the pros and cons of both suggestions. Hopefully, the city can be proactive and
address the possible need for action before the situation escalates to an
overwhelming point. The main object of the discussion was the need to protect
the integrity of our residential neighborhoods, the safety of the children who will
be more active during the upcoming warmer months, as well as the adults, and
reduce the volume of traffic on our residential streets. This will allow
maintenance repairs to be completed in Ward 4 and reduce the wear and tear on
our residential streets.
Council Member Dailey Jones, member of the Fair Housing Review Board: 1) The Fair
Housing Review Board met on Thursday, March 16, at 7 p.m. Assistant Law Director
Bryan O'Malley spoke to the board about his time spent in Washington, D. C.
representing the city at the Fair Housing Training Academy. Also, the board received a
report from him and a board member who were trained by the Housing and Urban
Development representatives who came to Cleveland to train them on a new system that
inputs any concerns that people might have about fair housing in the city. In addition, the
board was pleased that the Finance Committee approved the Law Department's request
of a part-time Assistant Law Director, using partial funds from the Housing and Urban
Development grant, who will assist the city with fair housing concerns and further our
ability to capacity build under the HUD grant.
AUDIENCE PA?~TICIPAT~4N
Mel Leeb, 27681 Laurell Lane, commented that, in the last 10 years, the road in the
Laurell Lane area has disintegrated considerably. In the past, he has met with
Councilman Miller and recently talked to Councilman Talton. At a meeting in 2002, the
mayor told the residents that in 2005 the city would do some considerable, major work on
Laurell Lane. Through the years, cold patching has been done. With cold patching, it
comes up on your tires, gets it in your garage and on your driveway. He and his
neighbors would like to know what the plans are for Laurell Lane in regards to doing
major repairs. Mayor O'Grady said there are no plans for Laurell Lane this year. He
would be very interested to see any documentation Mr. Leeb has from his predecessor.
Mr. Leeb said he would provide the information to the Mayor.
Joe Bowman, 27501 Butternut Ridge Road. (Distributed handout of a map.) He has
recently purchased a property on Butternut Ridge Road with a 60 x 250 foot lot that
would accommodate the old Stearns house, he believes to be the oldest house in the city,
that will be taken by the new fire station. He recently was able to inspect the house-it
is a magnificent property. The base house is 25 x 40, about 1,000 square feet an the
foundation. The basement has 40 foot pine beams unfinished with bark on. The first
floor is in very good condition. The second floor was rented and is in incredibly good
condition. He is quite excited only of the possibility of it moving to his property, but the
possibility of moving it onto Elmhurst, the street just to the east of it. He noted the rnap
previously distributed showed how the house could be moved to the back of the fire
9
