Council Minutes of 3/7/2006
offer and will stay on in that capacity. This is important because he brings the historical
knowledge we will need as we move forward, especially considering that Don Copeland
will be stepping down from S.D.C.'s Executive Director position in June.
4) Attended the Cuyahoga County Commissioners' meeting on March 2 with Planning
Director Wenger. The city received two Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)
awards. The first was $10,000 for our exterior maintenance program, which will help
low and moderate income families with needed home repairs. The second was $112,200
for ADA improvements at North Olmsted Park. These improvements will be new
family-friendly rest room facilities immediately adjacent to the Senior Center and
handicapped-friendly playground equipment. This is the first time in our city's history
that we have been able to provide a recreation asset for our handicapped children.
5) The Springvale fish fry, from 4 to 9 p.m. on Fridays, will continue every week until
Easter.
6) The 2006 budget process continues. The administration is proud of the budget and
looks forward to completing the review cycle.
?) The city, in conjunction with the Cuyahoga County Department of Employment and
Family Services and the State of Ohio Employment Connection, has scheduled a job fair
for Wednesday, June 14, to be held at the Church of St. Clarence. This is an ideal
location as it is on a bus route and has sufficient parking. Between 60 and 80 employers
are expected, and approximately 2,000 job seekers are expected to attend.
8) The Community Life Services Director is working on creating a "North Olmsted Day"
at Jacobs Field.
9) The Senior Center Garage Sale on Saturday, March 4, was a great event with about
800 people attending. We have a profit of approximately fourteen hundred dollars.
10) The city food cupboard has signed up to purchase food from the Cleveland Food
Bank. Donations for the city food cupboard can be made through the Community Life
Services Department.
11) On February 22, Human Resources Director Farver attended an informational
meeting held by the UAW 1250 regarding S.P.A.N. (Single Payer Action Network) This
is a ballot initiative petition to require the Ohio General Assembly to pass legislation
providing for single publicly funded and operated health care programs providing full
medical coverage for every resident in State of Ohio.
12) Last Sunday, there was a small fire on the 18th floor of the Westbury Apartment.
There were no injuries, and the damages were limited to one apartment.
13) The management of the Recreation Center, the Community Life Services Director
and the Safety Director have met to review the swim rates. The administration will be
presenting recommendations to City Council in the near future regarding the rate.
14) Soil testing for new Fire Station No. 2 was performed by Geo-Sci and no problem
were identified. Environmental testing of the house on the property confirmed the
presence of asbestos and lead paint and that will be mitigated before demolition.
15) Mr. Mike Raig of Mayfield Engineering has taken office as the City Engineer on a
90-day temporary basis. Next week, Mr. Raig will have ready RFP's for the Wastewater
Treatment Plant rate and operational study and an RFP for a permanent engineer. His
expertise has already been significantly helpful with regard to the Clague Road project,
the front entrance project and the discussion of an improved sound and possible video
system for City Council Chambers.
2
