Council Minutes of 2/7/2007
by nuclear powers. The same message was carried to the Chinese embassy and the U. S.
Dept. of State.
3) Offered congratulations to the city schools and citizens for passage of the operating
levy last night. Cheers to any citizen who took the time to go out and vote. Jeers go to
members of Ohio General Assembly who have not had the courage to take a system of
school funding that unfairly and improperly puts the burden primarily on the backs of
property owners to pay for schools
4) Departments:
• The Senior Center is taking appointments for free tax assistance through the
HARP. Appointments on Wednesdays beginning February 7 through April 11.
• Police patrol officer entry examination is scheduled for March 24. Applications
will be available starting February 23 at City Hall; last day applications will be
accepted is March 8. First 200 candidates who submit properly completed
applications will be eligible and invited to take the examination.
• This month, the County Commissioners will award to our city a Community
Development Block Grant of $30,400 to be used for ADA assessments of all city
buildings and infrastructure and programs and services.
• Crocker/Steams corridor plan public meeting will be held on February 19, 2007,
at 7 p.m. at the high school cafetorium. The will involve the presentation of
recommendations for land use, development and design of the Stearns corridor
and the Stearns/Lorain Road intersection. The presentation on January 31 with
the Cuyahoga County Engineer was with regard to the mechanical construction of
the roadway. That will not be a topic for discussion on February 19. The
discussion will be the redevelopment and land use issues associated with the
project.
• Six bids were considered for the I-480 and St. Route 252 overpass project. Board
of Control approved a contract with Blaze Construction. The project is estimated
to cost on the order of $1.6 million.
5) A combined Finance and Streets & Transportation Committee meeting was held last
night, and the focus of discussion was the city's 2007 streets repair plan. Thanks to the
members of Council those committees. Thanks to all members of Council for their
support in coming out and voicing support of the plan as presented.
6) Legislation is before Council that deals with the sound system in the Council
Chambers. It is currently anticipated the cost will be on the order of forty to forty-three
thousand dollars. He would encourage Council to support the administration in
amending that legislation to include both video and video presentation equipment. It is
something that anticipated to cost far more than the estimates received. Video recording
equipment opens up our government and makes meetings available through the city
website and cable channels. The cost is on the order of ten to fifteen thousand dollars.
Video presentation equipment cost will be on the order of thirty to thirty-five thousand
dollars. By roughly doubling the original amount of forty to forty-three thousand dollars,
we will have the complete package in place. If Council views this favorable, an
amendment to the legislation will be brought forward.
7) While in Washington, D. C. at the Conference of Mayors, as a member of the
International Affairs Standing Committee, he made a formal presentation about activities
of the Mayors for Peace organization. He is also on the Jobs and Workforce and
2
~a
