City Council Minutes of 1/16/2007
Mayor O'Grady said Mr. Groden's comments were well taken. The TIC scorecard deals
with economics. The question. is can. municipalities within Cuyahoga County
communicate with each other in the eventuality of a significant emergency, either a
natural disaster or a terrorist attack? The answer is no, not yet. The solution is dollars.
Is an economic issue. He will ensure Mr. Groden's comments find. their way to the Ohio
General Assembly. With regard to our city's preparedness, that is something we are
taking very seriously. He and the Chief of Police recently attended a seminar through
FEMA designed for municipal mayors to make them more aware of what the threat is and
what their reactions can be. Our city has plans in place, and they are continuously
reviewed. Regarding communications, we have brought in technology that allows us to
communicate more easily with surrounding emergency groups-police, f re, Hazmat,
SWAT, bomb disposal. North Olmsted is fortunate in that he is a retired special forces
officer who was trained in counter-terrorism.
Councilman Ryan is aware of economic problems in the community. We can spend our
time worrying about attacks, or we can be responsible and start saving our neighbors and
friends by concentrating our money and our efforts to make sure this community is
stronger financially. To continue on this path of spending money on something that might
be is not accomplishing what is going on right now. The State of Ohio is in a disaster
with people losing homes, and it is happening in North Olmsted. We should concentrate
on that and start doing something about the money that we get for public trust and
directing it the right way.
3) Deru~is Lambert, 25057 Carey Lane, spoke about Ordinance 2006-164 and said
Barton/Bradley is a matter of economics .for the community. The only two resources the
city has are the people's pockets and the land value that produces revenue for the city.
He feels the dollars lost in the future by this land not being developed properly are going
to far outrun what will. be received. by developing this land as residential. He feels North
Olmsted is lagging behind other cities that are building things with cash-which. is the
result of planning. He asked Council to vote against the rezoning.
4) Joseph Soltesz, 24827 Arlington Lane, spoke about the backyard flooding that he anal
his neighbors are experiencing. Recently, he had 14 inches of water in his backyard and
watched as the water came closer and closer to his home. He thanked Mr. Orlowski for
his input and efforts tv help the residents. He has been in contact with. Mr. Limpert and
thanked him also for his efforts with pumping out the water. He believes there is some
type of blockage in the sewers as it has been during the last six months that the water
does not go down. He would like the city to put a camera in the sewers to determine if
there is a blockage. He could live with the water in the backyard if it receded.
Mayor O'Grady said the W WTP anal Service Dept. continue to do things to help with
these problems. We are responsible for the sins of our fathers. Controls were needed
many years ago, but were not put in place.
10
