Council Minutes of 11/18/2008
in compliance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Putting up signs that
go over and above that might cause problems, which should be something that's looked
at by Engineering and Police. Then, if legislation is needed, to come back with that
legislation. Councilman Gareau noted the goal was to make it clear that trucks should not
be going down side streets to try to get to I-90. He noted that trucks will not be able to go
further north once they get to Center Ridge Road which might make the drivers travel
Lorain Road to other streets that go through to I-90. Mr. Burns noted that for years
Westlake resisted extending Route 252 and making it into afour-lane road. Currently,
the only section of Columbia Road that isn't four lanes is from Center Ridge to Rose
Road. In the meantime, Westlake is saying they're not going to make Crocker Road a
truck route. It's afour-lane road and it connects the two interstates and does exactly what
Route 252 was supposed to do. Somebody needs to look a this and find out what really
happened here and why we're going to put this kind of money into this improved street
and then the people who were supposed to use it, the truckers, to connect between the two
freeways aren't going to be allowed to use it. Councilman Gareau said Westlake might
be careful that it gets what it wishes because, if these trucks are going up to Center Ridge
Road and they can't go further north, they're probably going to want to go down Center
Ridge up to Route 252. Mr. Burns noted that is a problem because Center Ridge Road
doesn't have standard lanes and two trucks can't even pass.
4) David Welch, 6352 Somerset Drive, said the city is sorely lacking a very user-friendly
website. The city website is hard to maneuver and navigate and there's little information
that is easy to get to. He wondered if anybody was working on this and noted the schools
had recently updated their website. Mayor O'Grady said the website as it exists today is
avast improvement over what it was. However, Mr. Welch's comments are well taken,
and the city has been working for almost a year now to completely revamp the website
and to bring it into the 21S` Century. It's going to be vastly improved; it's going to be
easy to navigate through with drop-down menus and an improved appearance. The
change is coming soon.
5) Tim Smith, 6053 Sherwood, a hockey parent, wanted to address some potential lost
revenue at the Rec Center and ice rink. Residents were told previously that the Rec
Center is a drain on city funds. As a ice hockey referee and an instruction staff member,
he was asked to conduct a seminar to instruct new and young referees to become ice
hockey officials. He tried to book some ice time at the North Olmsted ice rink. He left
two messages, and he even left a written note at the front desk. There was no response.
Since then, he has spoken to the hockey director from the Elyria hockey club who was
having practice at the Baron's rink at Brookpark and Tiedeman roads. The Elyria hockey
director told him he contacted North Olmsted trying to baok ice time and never got a
response. Our Rec Center is losing out on revenue. He wondered if there are plans to
market the Rec Center and try to draw in this revenue instead of letting it go right down
I-480. Mayor O'Grady thanked Mr. Smith for his comments and asked him to speak to
Community Life Services Director Dailey.
10
~.
