Council Minutes 10-21-2008
.~,,
7) Third annual Rake North Olmsted Day, in collaboration with North Olmsted Scout
troops, is scheduled for Saturday, November 8. Anyone willing to rake or anyone who is
aware of a resident who is either senior or disabled and wishes to have this service, please
advise.
8) The Civil Service Commission will be conducting a promotional exam for the position
of Road Foreman on November 15 with 10 Service Dept. employees registered.
9) The city will be hosting planners from throughout the northeast Ohio area at an Ohio
Planning Web Conference on Wednesday, November 5. The topic is creating successful
meetings.
10) Update to the regional fire discussion: twelve submissions were received by the
Westshore Council of Governments in response to the fire district request for
qualifications. Copies of the submission were distributed to the participating mayors,
safety directors and fire chiefs for review and scoring. COG will meet again on
November 18 to select three of those companies for interviews.
11) The Police Dept. is working with the Vacant House Task Force to identify and
remove from the list properties that have been sold or occupied. These inspections are
just part of a process that is helping us protect properties located throughout our city.
12) Congratulations to Chris Allegra of our Division of Youth Services for her No Lives
Lost (NiLL) campaign that she has instituted and successfully launched at both the high
school and the middle school. Students participated through different alcohol and drug
abuse conversations and activities. The reviews received back from the school, teachers,
administrators, and students have been overwhelmingly positive.
13) Schedules are out and leaf pick-up begins Monday in Ward II.
14) The posts for the new walls on Stearns Road north of Lorain have begun to be
installed finally.
15) Progress continues at a rapid rate for the I-480 sound walls. Although this is
somewhat weather dependent, the project should be done near the end of October or very
early in November.
16) We received very impressive work again from our Fleet Dept. and Mgr. Tim Conway
as they rebuilt two of our 1996 salt trucks. The trucks looked miserable, and they were
rusted straight through. The repairs they made to these vehicles make them look almost
new and will extend their lives for years. Two new trucks would have cost the city over
$100,000 each to purchase.
17) We are greatly saddened by the loss of Roy Garland. Roy was active in our city
government, in our schools, and in our larger community. He was a lifelong educator, a
leader with the Kiwanis and Toastmasters organizations, and a personal friend. He will
be greatly missed. (A moment of silence was held in memory of Mr. Garland.)
Law Director Dubelko: 1) Litigation:
• City of North Olmsted v. International Association of Fire Fighters, motion to
vacate in the Eighth District Court of Appeals, the city filed its reply brief
yesterday. The briefing schedule has been completed.
• Howard Baker v. Jack Frolo, which is in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.
The case is being defended by insurance defense counsel. An answer was filed by
insurance defense counsel on October 15.
2
