Council Minutes of 9/16/2008
STC's current proposal to potentially absorb the entity NOCOP. Discussions continue on
this with significant North Olmsted representation, to include Director Copfer, Director
Dailey, President of Council Kennedy and Councilman Barker.
5) When he was chairman of the Westshore Council of Governments in 2006, he initiated
a study of regional fire. He is pleased to report that this conversation continues with fire
chiefs, law directors, finance directors, and mayors throughout the Westshore region
working together to determine how we can best serve our citizens while reducing costs.
6) Through our association with the Ohio Benefits Bank, the Department of Community
Life Services has been able to assist North Olmsted residents in receiving close to
$30,000 in food and utility assistance. This program was brought to the city earlier this
year at no cost and has already worked to help those in our community who are in need.
7) Our third annual "Rake North Olmsted Day" which is done in association with the Boy
Scouts of America's Yard Charge will be on Saturday, November 8. Anyone or any
organization wishing to assist or anyone knowing of a senior citizen or disabled citizen
who needs assistance with yard raking, please contact the Dept. of Community Life
Services.
8) On September 8, we received notice to negotiate from the Fraternal Order of Police,
which includes the two police units and the corrections officers. Their labor contract
expires at the end of this year, and the administration has brought forward legislation to
retain counsel for that purpose.
9) An employee brown-bag lunch is scheduled for September 19 for a discussion of stress
management.
10) A dedication ceremony for the Peake historical marker will be on Sunday, September
28, at 2 p.m. The Peake family was the first African-American family to settle
permanently in the Cleveland area. For additional information, please contact the
Planning Department.
11) The ribbon cutting for the library improvement project is tentatively set for Friday,
October 10, at 4 p.m. at the North Olmsted Branch Library. All are welcome to attend.
12) We are proud that the City of North Olmsted will be hosting planners from the
northeast Ohio region at an Ohio Planning Conference web conference on Wednesday,
September 24, from 4 to 5 p.rn. in Council Chambers. The topic is mastering density.
13) The goal to have all police and fire personnel satisfied in basic incident command
structure has been met. Along with our Safety Director, all safety forces have been
certified in NIMS 700 and ICS 100. Leadership teams from both departments are now
being instructed on higher level ICS 300 and 400 incident command training sponsored
by Cuyahoga County's Emergency Management Agency and the Dept. of Homeland
Security. Following the ICS training, both police and fire personnel will participate in a
two-day tabletop exercise scheduled for September 24 and 25. Simulations of natural and
man-made disasters will be created to allow training for our first-responder personnel.
14) Pleased to announce that 2008 marks the 30~' anniversary of the Division of
Community Life Services. The division began as the Youth Development Frogram in
1978 under former director Don Copeland. Major support for the program now comes
from the County's Juvenile Court. The division is sponsoring a fundraiser at the Beck
Center on Sunday, December 14. Please contact the office of Youth Services for more
information.
2
