(~ <br />Council Minutes of 8/19/2008 <br />up to one-half of the total $20 million deficit. The RTA Board of Directors did meet this <br />morning, but no action was taken. Their recommendations will probably be made in <br />September. <br />5} Our first annual community "shred-it day" will take place during Homecoming on <br />Saturday, August 23, from 9 a.m. until Noon in the Senior Center parking lot. This <br />service is available to North Olmsted residents only. Each household may bring material <br />equivalent to the capacity of two standard size copy boxes. <br />6) The annual Community Council Homecoming will be this weekend from August 21 to <br />August 24. The annual parade will step off at 1 p.m. on Sunday from the Middle School <br />parking lot. <br />7) The Dept. of Community Life Services is initiating a drive for school supplies for <br />needy children. Supplies can be dropped off at City Ha11 during business hours. <br />8) Our "Heat the Countr}~' program will provide free furnace and plumbing inspections <br />on Saturday, September 20, from 9 a.m. until Noon. Single persons with income below <br />$18,200 or two people with income below $24,500 who have not had this free inspection <br />within the last two years can qualify. This is administered through the county. <br />Additional information is available from the Senior Center. <br />9) Senior citizen residents who receive Social Security or are on limited pensions can <br />qualify for the Senior Safety Program to receive grab bars, hand rails and other safety <br />items installed in their home at no expense. Contact the Senior Center for information. <br />10) The AFSCME Service union ratified their labor contract last week. Negotiations <br />with Dispatchers will be held on August 25 and 27. <br />11) The Cultural Activities Commission and Kiwanis held a successful second annual <br />arts and crafts festival on Sunday, August 10, at Frostville Museum. Twenty-five local <br />artists and more than a thousand people attended. Funds collected during the event will <br />be used to support the city's food cupboard. <br />12) A Community Development Block Grant public hearing will be held on Wednesday, <br />August 27, at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers. The purpose to solicit public input and <br />project ideas from the community. In September, the CDBG citizens advisory committee <br />will be making a recommendation for the 2009 grant program. <br />13) The Mattel Corporation is creating model cars using North Olmsted Fire Department <br />and North Olmsted Police Department logos. Mattel has worked up a prototype for the <br />Fire Chief s car using an Olds 442. The car is yellow and has red flames coming out the <br />side. It's very cool! Production will begin shortly. <br />14) An expanded city-wide paper and cardboard recycling program commences <br />Wednesday, August 20. Anew revenue contract with Gateway Recycling allows us to <br />accept donations of cardboard, paper, and telephone books. <br />15) Our Fleet Department has received over $10,000 in 2008 from programs and new <br />efforts to recycle. Items being recycled include metal, fuel, and computers. We will <br />continue to expand these programs in the future. <br />16) The temporary 25 mph speed limit on Stearns Road has been returned to 35 mph. <br />The Pheasant's Walk entrance off Lorain is closed and is expected to reopen later this <br />week. <br />17) The outside crack sealing program has just completed. <br />18) City Council will vote on four Charter review recommendations. He asks that these <br />issues be placed on the ballot to allow citizens to decide. He accepts that in some cases <br />2 <br /> <br />
