j
Council Minutes of 8/5/2008
inside and out. Thank you to Council for their support in getting many of those things
done down at Frostville.
4) Last night attended a public hearing of the Regional Transit Authority in Rocky River.
Councilman Barker was also in attendance. The meeting regarding proposed changes to
routes was very well attended by our citizens and so many more. The RTA leadership
heard very directly from our citizens, mayors in the audience, our state representative,
and from our United States representative Dennis Kucinich. It was emphasized from our
standpoint that the 86 and 96 flyers must continue. If minor changes are in order to
reduce some lines, that's acceptable. But cancelling those routes would be devastating to
North Olmsted. Additionally, he expressed concern that changing the cross-town 75X to
a feeder to the red line at the Triskett transit station would be devastating to that line.
The 75 cross-town is the line that created NOMBL, that created the need for transit from
North Olmsted and for the western suburbs into the core city. We're hopeful that those
lines survive. A decision from RTA is expected by October.
5) First annual community shred-it day will take place during Homecoming on Saturday,
August 23, from 9 a.m. until noon. There will be free, quick shredding of all documents
for North Olmsted residents only, and each household may bring the equivalent of two
standard size copy boxes.
6) Pleased to announce the wall of former mayors is complete after receiving pictures of
former Mayors Boyle and Musial.
7) The Senior Center hosted a housing fair on July 30'that was a great success. Over 45
vendors and approximately 170 people attended, raising $1,240 for the Center..
8) The fall Recreation program guide should have arrived at everyone's home this past
weekend. We are pleased to offer so many different programs that will serve the
residents of all ages in North Olmsted.
9) Regarding the Rec Center, there are concerns with the ice rink compressors. We have
eight compressors, at a minimum six are needed to make sure the ice will stay frozen.
Two are failing at this point. One can be repaired at a relatively reasonable cost. If a
new compressor is needed it would cost $75,000. He has made sure the schools are
aware of the continuing deterioration of that aged facility.
10) The annual Homecoming festival will be held from Thursday, August 21, to Sunday,
August, 24. The parade will step off at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
11) We had six different retirements last month to include road foreman Don Wilhelmy
and secretary Joan Fletcher. We thank these six individuals for their combined years of
service to the city that amounted to 167 years-great experience, great service, and great
dedication.
12) The AFSCME ClericaUTechnical ratified their labor contract on July 22. Final
review is being conducted both by the union and the city.
13) Mr. Dale Mitchell has been hired on as the Assistant Building Commissioner.
14) Construction at the North Olmsted Library is proceeding well and is on schedule for
completion in October. In attendance is the library manager, Dianne Discenzo, who does
a great job for us.
15) Cultural Activities Commission and Kiwanis Club are sponsoring their second annual
Arts & Crafts Festival at Frostville on Sunday, August 10, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will
be entertainment and food, and admission is free.
2
