Council Minutes of 5/20/2008
3) Memorial Day ceremonies will take place in North Olmsted on May 26. The morning
will begin at 8 a.m. with visits to our two cemeteries. The main ceremony will be held at
North Olmsted Park.
4) The administration has been listening to the many comments that have come forward
with regard to our plan for improved recreation. Based upon what was heard, changes
have been made. A number of citizens and members of Council expressed some
hesitancy over partnership with the YMCA. We are no longer partnered with the YMCA.
Additionally, he will be bringing legislation to Council on June 3. The legislation will be
generally the same plan--1/8 of 18to of income tax to fund a new recreation center, which
will be $75 a year for a person who earns an annual salary of $60,000. On a bi-weekly or
bi-monthly basis, it's a little over $3 each paycheck, which is a pretty small amount. But
the small amount will make a great deal of difference. It is estimated that over the course
of 30 years, it will raise about $45 million. That will pay for the construction of a new
facility that will not only enhance recreation in the city of North Olmsted, it will also be
an economic benefit, and it will be a benefit for the value of our homes. Prospective
home buyers are usually shown recreation centers as it has an impact that improves the
value of homes. There were also concerns raised about the final shape of the recreation
center-how many basketball courts, how many tennis courts. There area great many
different ideas of what it should be. His intent is to bring forward to City Council
legislation that will provide the maximum amount of flexibility and that the issue will be
on the ballot in November. Once approved and dollars are in hand, we will do a detailed
market study, and operational studies. Also, we will do the detailed engineering and the
detailed architecture that would be needed, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. If
passed by voters in November, by January we would begin detailed planning and analysis
to make sure the facility we construct would be what serves the needs of the citizens. Is
an exciting opportunity, and he looks look forward to bringing it to Council at the next
meeting.
5) Second annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life will be held on June 21 and 22
held at North Olmsted High School track. To participate or get information, contact the
Department of Community Life Services.
6) The ceremony held at City Hall to honor Maj. D. Brock Foster, U. S. Air Force
Retired, presenting him with the Distinguished Flying Cross for valor in Viet Nam, is
currently playing on our cable network.
7) Second steering committee meeting of the Great Northern Multi-modal Transportation
Plan will be held Wednesday, May 21, in the caucus room.
8) Pre-bid meeting for the library improvement project is scheduled for Thursday, May
22, at 10 a.m. at North Olmsted branch library. Bid opening will be on Tuesday, June 3.
9) Interviews are being held far the Asst. Building Commissioner position.
10) A vacant house task force is being convened as orchestrated by the Safety Director
with the cooperation of Building, Law, Police, Fire, Service and Safety Departments. It
will be a continuation of our comprehensive plan to protect housing values in the city,
especially in these difficult times.
11) Safety Dept. has scheduled a major table-top exercise for September 24, 25. It will
include all municipal departments to practice what we would do in case of a major
crisis/emergency.
2
