Council Minutes of 4/15/2008 <br />local emergency response, community safety, and disaster relief, for which the <br />T community is extremely thankful. <br />2) On Monday, April 28, at 11 a.m. in Council Chambers all aze invited to a ceremony <br />where United States Senator Sherrod Brown will present the Distinguished Flying Cross <br />to Maj. D. Brock Foster of the United States Air Force almost forty years after Maj. <br />Foster earned his distinction for heroism during the Vietnam Waz. Mr. Foster is a veteran <br />who served in WWII, Korea and Viet Nam. He received a certificate announcing the <br />awazd but was never presented with the medal. <br />3) North Olmsted has been named Tree City USA for the 23`~ yeaz. The award from the <br />Arbor Day Foundation recognizes our commitment to communty forestry. <br />4) Amended Senate Bill 221 passed out of the Ohio House Public Utilities Committee <br />last night. As currently written, this bill would end governmental aggregation in the State <br />of Ohio, for example, NOPEC. If the bill continues on and is passed into law as it <br />currently stands, citizens in North Olmsted and throughout the State, especially in <br />northeast Ohio, will see a significant spike in the cost of electric and gas effective <br />January 1, 2009. <br />5) Thanks to Ascension Lutheran Church for a very successful food drive completed this <br />past weekend which has helped to keep our food bank open. <br />6) The second annual North Olmsted American Cancer Society Relay for Life will be <br />held on June 21 and 22 at North Olmsted High School. All aze invited to participate. <br />Cancer survivors will be our guest at a luncheon. <br />7) A fund raiser to benefit the Senior Center will be held on Apri130 at Applebee's. <br />8) An Earth Day and Arbor Day celebration and tree planting will be held on April 22 at <br />11:30 a.m. at the Park. <br />9) Former Fire Dept. employee John Davis has withdrawn his appeal to the Industrial <br />Commission regazding his occupational disease. As no other avenue for appeal exists, <br />the Bureau of Workers' Compensation denial of his claim is sustained. <br />10) Deadline to submit applications for the position of Asst. Building Commissioner is <br />April 28. <br />11) Negotiations aze on-going with AFSCME ClericaUTech and Dispatch. The <br />AFSCME Service members chose not to ratify the city's offer, and we expect to go to <br />fact finding soon. <br />12) DARE graduations begin this week with St. Brendan's graduating on Thursday; Pine <br />School next week on Tuesday; Chestnut School on Apri130. <br />13) The Police Dept., in order to comply with State requirements for continuing <br />education requirements for police officers, has begun in-house training. <br />14) An emergency response expert from the Federal Emergency Management Authority <br />national headquarters will be in North Olmsted May 6-9 to conduct incident command <br />structure training for all Safety Dept. personnel. Members of the City Council are <br />welcome to attend afour-hour introductory session as observers on Tuesday, May 6, or <br />Wednesday, May 7. <br />15) The "Do Not Knock Registry" for the City of North Olmsted went into effect on <br />April 14.
