Council Minutes of 1/15/2008
Cuyahoga County Board of Health and the Department of Development. This program
helps our senior citizens remain in their homes under safe conditions. It's designed to
help make necessary repairs or upgrades to a home that allows a senior to stay and
maintain their independence longer than they possibly could otherwise. For more
information, contact the CLS Dept. or Tiffany Hunt at the Senior Center.
5) The Senior Center is accepting applications for the Home Energy Assistance Program,
HEAP. Applications are available at the Center and at City Hall and will be accepted
through May 31. HEAP provides assistance with home heating bills.
6) Tax assistance, through scheduled appointments, is free at the Senior Center on
Wednesdays, beginning February 6 through Apri19.
7) Implementing the fact-finders recommendations regarding our health care, fire fighters
were advised that they will have until January 18 to opt out of the new health care plan.
To assist them with the decision-making, Medical Mutual and Master Consulting Group
will be holding employee information meetings.
8) An exam to establish a Civil Service eligibility list for the dispatcher position will be
administered on February 16 at 10 a.m. at St. Clarence Church hall. Applications are
available at City Hall until January 21.
9) The library improvement program is progressing as the architect has completed design
development for the basement, first floor and exterior improvements and has begun
drafting the construction documents.
10) Final touch-up work at Fire Station No. 2 continues with the completion of the locker
room, HVAC adjustments, and the corrections needed in the training room. Other
outstanding punch lists for the window contractor and the training tower are being
executed.
11) In an effort to better serve our citizens and respond to the ever-growing need for
emergency medical runs, the Fire Dept. is working through operational issues in an
attempt to put a third EMS squad into regular rotation in our city. Neighboring cities
have been made aware of our efforts through the Westshore Council of Governments.
12) Cuyahoga County Board of Health will present a workshop on Wednesday, January
30, on preparations necessary to keep the city open and operating should a significant
pandemic occur. All elected officials are welcome to join the administration for this
class.
14) Traffic on Stearns Road has been shifted to the new lanes on the eastern side of the
roadway. Although the entire project was scheduled to complete near mid-2009, with
changes to the scheduling and construction, it is hoped to have this project done by the
end of 2008.
15) A 2007 street survey has been completed by reviewing the most needy streets.
(Those with a score of 5 or lower with 10 being a new street.) The information is being
analyzed and will be presented to Council with a proposal to spend $1 million on road
repairs in 2008.
16) The $6,000 energy grant from the Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council will be used
to put low energy lighting in the Community Cabin and Senior Center. We expect a 30%
reduction in energy uses for lighting in those facilities due to these improvements.
Additionally, it was determined that the Community Cabin's ceiling was never insulated.
It will be insulated this year, which is expected to greatly reduce the $9,000+ that is
expended per year for heating and cooling of that facility.
2
