Council Minutes of 9-15-2009
REPORTS
Mayor O'Grady: 1) Congratulations and thanks to the families of Chiefs Christman and
Hird, who were recognized earlier. It's important to say thank you to our safety forces.
It's important to say thank you for their families as well, because they sacrifice right
along with the men and women who wear the blue of the police or fire department.
2) Congratulations to Mrs. Seman and her husband as she begins her retirement. It's
well deserved, and thank you very much for her many years of service to our community.
3) Retiring after twenty three years of dedicated service is Building Commissioner, Dave
Conway. His last day at City Hall will be Friday, September 18` . All the members of
Council and the public are welcome to come say thank you to Dave as he says goodbye.
This is the fiftieth year that the city of North Olmsted has had a certified building
department in the State of Ohio. That anniversary comes up on September 21S`. During
all that time, the city has had such high quality in the Building Commissioner position.
There have been only three people that have served during those fifty years.
Congratulations and welcome to Assistant Building Commissioner, Dale Mitchell, who
will take over very soon upon the retirement of Dave as the next Building Commissioner.
He has served the city exceedingly well, and there is no doubt that will continue in his
new position.
4) All are invited to attend an important event on Tuesday, September 29`" at 5 p.m. to
benefit the Boy Scouting programs in our scouting district, which includes the cities of
Berea, Brook Park, Middleburg Heights, North Olmsted, Olmsted Falls, and Strongsville.
This six-city business after hours event will include appetizers, beverages, and
networking with others who recognize and support the value of the scouting programs.
The event will be held at Tony K's restaurant in Berea. A donation of $50 for this
fundraiser is requested. Please make out the check to the Boy Scouts of America.
5) Regarding labor negotiations with the Fraternal Order of Police, the police units have
refused to accept the mediated proposal brought to them by their negotiating committee.
A fact finding hearing has been scheduled for September 22nd. The third mediation
session with the International Association of Firefighters is scheduled for September 16`h
A tentative agreement has been reached with AFSCME, which will be presented to their
full membership tomorrow. We are scheduling sessions with the AFSCME
Clerical/Technical and our Dispatch Units.
6) We have received a $100,000 federal stimulus package award under the Byrne Grant.
The money will be used as it was dedicated for within our police department, primarily to
replace an aging radio console.
7) Operation Medicine Cabinet will be held on Saturday October 3rd from 9 a.m. until 3
p.m. at Westlake's Clague Park right off Clague Road. Residents may bring unused or
outdated prescription medications to the collection site for proper disposal. Black out all
prescription information on your label. This program is being sponsored by the West
Shore Enforcement Bureau and their narcotics task force. Please do not put older
prescriptions down the toilet.
8) New information is distributed daily regarding the H1N1 flu virus. Fair weather has
limited the spread of the disease. For the week ending September 4, there were just two
hospitalizations for the swine flu in Ohio. Vaccine manufacturers have had success, and
the vaccine was approved today by the Center for Disease Control. Ohio is slated for a
soft start vaccination campaign beginning September 25`h through October 2nd
4
.~
