Council Minutes of 5/19/2009
~'~,
3
development. The proceeds go to the Leader Light Foundation, and they will be doing
good works with those proceeds.
5) Currently working with Ms. Reem Khaleq of the city schools and with students at
Maple Intermediate on a "Leaders Are Readers" book drive. The goal is to get books
from local leaders that would appeal to young children through age 12. The books can be
new or gently used children's books, and books can be dropped off with director Dailey
in our Community Life Services Department until Wednesday, May 27.
6) The third annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life will be June 20 at the high
school track. This year, as we have done in the past, the event will kick off with a tribute
to our local cancer survivors. The lunch is donated by a very good corporate citizen, our
local Chick-Fil-A restaurant. Anyone interested in participating or getting more
information, please see director Dailey or chairwoman Melissa Meredith.
7) Annual Fourth of July parade and cookout will take place entirely on the City Hall
campus this year. This year, Fourth of July coincides with the NOSO Cup playoffs and
the park will be in use. The bike judging will be held on the City Hall campus as usual,
and the parade will go out Dover Center Road, down to Butternut Ridge Road to Lorain
Road, down Lorain Road and back into the parking lot. The games, hot dogs, and
beverages will be in the area around Old Town Hall. Everyone is invited to come out to
this fun event.
8) The North Olmsted ice show was held this past weekend. Congratulations to Director
Dailey, Recreation Commissioner DiSalvo and all of his staff, and skating pro Jeff
Marshall. It was an excellent event with a higher turnout than what we have seen in the
past.
9) Participated in the opening of the Hot Stove baseball league. They are down 20% in
participation, which can be expected as a result of the economy.
10) On May 14, the Bureau of Worker's compensation conducted a probationary audit
the city's self-insured program. The auditor determined that our program is in good order
and found no need to make recommendations or changes to the program. The next audit
will occur in 2011.
11) The traffic count project related to the Great Northern Multi Modal Transportation
Plan will be concluded next week thanks to the cooperation of our Youth Diversion
program. Information collected will be invaluable as we consider future changes to our
roadways in the coming months and years.
12) As a result of the city becoming the 49th Certified Local Government in Ohio,
Landmarks Commission members will be participating in a mandatory meeting
sponsored by the Ohio Historical Society where they will learn about strengthening local
historic preservation ordinances and design review procedures.
13) The Safety Dept. submitted a grant proposal to the Dept. of Homeland Security for a
new aerial truck. The city should receive notification on the grant later this summer.
14) The Safety Dept. has received a request from the Division of Police to advise a
homeowner on Porter Road of a pending violation to the criminal nuisance ordinance.
The Safety Director will follow directives in that ordinance and advise the owner of the
charges and wait for a response, expecting correction of the problem. This will be the
first use of the criminal nuisance legislation that was passed by Council last August.
15) Pleased to report that the Lewis Road bridge construction is now complete, and the
road is now reopened well ahead of the deadline for that project of 2010.
2
„~,,<,,..,un ~,, ~.,,,„~
