Public Hearing, Ordinance 2008-131
1/6/2009
Planning Commission or the administration. Several residents on Columbia Road were
recently presented an annual increase of 1000% in their flood insurance premium cost
from approximately $300 to $3,000 per year. Due to a recent occurrence in Broadview
Heights, having a detention pond uphill from your residence puts you at a greater risk. At
the last meeting with the developer, it was stated the detention pond is now a retention
pond and will hold water at all times. Does the purported high water table in this area
affect this change? The risk of possible failure increases. An article written in 2002 by
Stuart Meck was presented by the City Planner. While I believe Mr. Meck felt the need
to publish at this point in his career, he does state that the United States Supreme Court
upheld the right of residents in Ohio to reserve unto themselves the final say on zoning
changes. Our city wards are quite large in population and encompass a large land mass.
What affects one section of a ward may not be as great of a concern to more remote areas
of the ward. Coupled with voter apathy, there may be a more level playing field than
anyone may imagine. With a level playing filed, each side can lobby for their viewpoint
and provide the pros and cons of a proposed zoning change."
President Kennedy adjourned the public hearing at 7:07 p.m.
~ ,~.!
arbara L.
