discharge, the Cify shafl deposit with the regular U.S. Mail, a certified letter to the involved employee <br />stating the reasons for disciplinary action taken, and shall hand deliver a copy of same to a Union <br />Officer or Steward. Disciplinary action may be appealed by the Union through the Grievance <br />Procedure commencing at Step 2 of the Grievance Procedure. An employee who desires to protest <br />the disciplinary action must make an e(ection within five (5) working days foNawing receipt of written <br />notice as to whether he wishes to pursue the grievance procedure. <br />Section 6. The City shall insure that all documents placed in an employee's official personnel <br />file shall be first initialed and dated by the employee concerned, or if he refuses, than by his steward <br />or other Union Officer. The initialing of any materials to be pfaced into any emptoyee's officiai <br />personnel record will not indicate an agreement by the empioyee, the Steward, or other Union Officer <br />as to the contents of the material, but does acknowledge the employee has seen it. <br />ARTICLE 7 - GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE <br />Section 1. 1t is mutually understood that the prampt presentation, adjustment and answering of <br />grievances is desirable in the interesf of sound relations between the employee and the City. The <br />prompt and fair disposition of grievances involves important and equal obligations and <br />responsib+lities, both joint and independent, on the part of the representatives of each party to <br />protect and preserve fihe Grievance Procedure as an orderly means of resolving grievances. Actions <br />by the City or the Union which tend to impair or weaken the Grievance Procedure are impraper. <br />Section 2. A grievance is a dispute vr difference between the City and the Unian, or befinreen <br />the City and an employee, conceming the interpretation or app(ication and/or compliance with the <br />tenns of this Agreement and shall include disputes concerning disciplinary actions. When any such <br />grievances arise, the following procedure shall be observed: <br />All grievances sha(i be written and fiied on an Official Grievance Form.
