v_ _. . ? ...??... ......,? ?. ? _. .. . .? ,.? . . <br />r <br />tunnels, underground utility vaults, trenches, excavations, pumping/lift stations and <br />pipelines. <br />The multiple hazards associated with enuance and work in confined spaces are capable <br />of causing bodily injury, illness, or death to W.R.E.S. employees. Confined spaces can <br />become unsafe as i result of: (1) possible atmospheric contamination by toxic or <br />flammable vapors; (2) oxygen deficiency (i.e. less than 19.5 %); (3) the possibility of <br />liquids, gases, vapors or solids being admitted during occupancy; or (4) physical isolation <br />and engulfinent of employees in need of rescue. <br />This procedure prescribes minunum requirements for safe entry, continued work in, and <br />exit from confined spaces. Additionally, it describes the steps necessary to protect <br />W.R.E.S. personnel from exposure to dangerous air contaminants, explosive <br />atmospheres, and/or oxygen deficiency. <br />V. DEFINITIONS <br />A. Atmosphere - Gases, vapors, mists, fumes and dusts present within the confined <br />space. <br />B. Attendant - A standby employee who is stationed nearby to the confined space <br />operation. The attendant is familiar with confined space procedures, in <br />recognizing signs of fatigue or overexposure, is in frequent communication with <br />entrants, insures the security of the work site, is authorized to terminate any <br />operations, and is prepared to summon rescue & emergency services. <br />C. Authorized Entrants - An employee who has received special training in <br />confined space procedures, specialized equipment, hazard recognition, and is <br />authorized by the company to enter a permit space. <br />D. Confined Space - A space that <br />1. Is large enough and so configured that an employee can bodily enter and <br />perform assigned work: AND <br />2. Has limited or restricted means for entry or exit (for example, sewer <br />manholes, tanks, vessels, silos, storage bins, hoppers, vaults, and pits); <br />AND <br />3. Is not designed for continuous employee occupancy. <br />E. Hazardous Atmosphere - An atmosphere that may expose employees to the risk <br />of death, incapacitation, impairment of ability of self-rescue, injury, or acute <br />illness.
