Council Minutes of 12-17-2013
made a motion to suspend the rules requiring three readings and formal committee review
as this was discussed in Caucus and the Law Dept. would like to get this in place as soon
;, as possible. The motion was seconded by Councilman Kearney and passed unanimously.
Dennis Lambert, 25057 Carey Lane said he does not fully understand the reasoning for
hiring this advocacy center to do this. Fair Housing laws have been around for years and
cities have been complying without having to go to advocacy centers to do this. No
demographics have been presented to show that there has been a change in the percentage
of minorities living in the community that indicates a potential for discrimination.
Gareau said if the city has an Ordinance designed to ensure the rights of minorities to
obtain housing within the city, it is not beyond belief that the city would hire a group to
use individuals to serve as tests to ensure that the law is being followed. That is the
whole point of it. Lambert said the city has received Fair Housing funding for being in
compliance without using the advocacy group. Gareau said the city has received HUD
funding for the city's initiatives. Councilman Orlowski said the city has tested real estate
agents and rental properties within the city and are looking to see if everyone is treated
equally.
Councilman Barker moved for adoption. The motion was seconded by Councilman
Kearney and passed unanimously. Resolution 2013-116 adopted 7-0.
MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS
Councilwoman Jones scheduled a Committee of the Whole for Tuesday January 7, 2014
at 6:45 p.m. to discuss Council committee assignments.
She scheduled a Recreation Committee meeting for Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at 7:00
p.m. to discuss 2013-112.
She scheduled a Finance Committee meeting for Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at 7:15 p.m. to
discuss 2013-115.
With the agenda being completed and there being no further business to come before
Council, President Jones adjourned the Council meeting at 8:51 p.m.
,i,j L) t tALiii/ /_/,-)i.''A r -'' ';
Marie Ga o, Clerk of Council Nicole Dailey Jones, Pr e of Council
9
