D. Joint Cleaner: Recommended by sealant or caulking compound manufacturer. <br />E. Bond breaker: Either polyethylene film or plastic tape as recommended by the sealant <br />manufacturer. <br />F. Color: Where manufacturer's standard colors do not closely match materials being sealed, <br />provide a custom color. <br />PART 3 -- EXECUTION <br />3.01 QUALITY CONTROL <br />A. Coordinate work with details shown on approved shop drawings prepared by other trades. <br />B. Verify conditions in the field. <br />C. Schedule work to follow closely the installation of other trades. <br />D. Apply sealants and related items in temperatures and dry conditions recommended by the <br />manufacturers. <br />E. Do not paint sealant, unless recommended by sealant and paint manufacturer. <br />3.02 PREPARATION <br />A. Protect finished surfaces adjoining by using masking tape or other suitable materials. <br />B. Clean and prime joints before starting any caulking or sealing work. <br />C. Thoroughly clean joints and spaces of mortar and other foreign materials. Cleaning agent <br />shall be Xylol or similar non - contaminating solvent to remove any film from metal surfaces. <br />Masonry or concrete surfaces shall be brushed or air jet cleaned. <br />D. Joint Requirements <br />1. All joints and spaces to be sealed in exterior work shall be less than 1/2 inch deep <br />and not less than 1/4 inch wide. If joints in masonry are less than that specified <br />herein, the mortar shall be cut out to the required width and depth. All joints and <br />spaces to receive sealant shall be completely prepared and thoroughly dry before <br />installation of sealant. <br />2. Unless otherwise specified, joints and spaces which are open to a depth of 1/2 inch <br />or greater shall be solidly filled with back -up material to within 1/4 inch of the surface. <br />Back -up material shall be packed tightly and made continuous throughout the length <br />of the joints. Bond breaker shall be applied as required. If joints are less than <br />1/4 inch deep, the back -up material may be omitted, a bond breaker substituted and <br />the joint completely filled with sealant. The back -up material shall not project beyond <br />the 1/4 inch depth of the open space in any joint.
