TOBACCO USE / EXPOSURE REDUCTION This program focuses on reducing the impact that tobacco use/exposure has on the health of county residents. Initiatives currently include encouragement and development of comprehensive tobacco -free school policies, activities to counter the influence of the tobacco industry, and the enforcement of the Ohio Smoke Free Workplace Law. RABIES CONTROL AND PREVENTION The primary objective of the Rabies Control and Prevention Program is to monitor the incidence of rabies in domestic and wild animal populations. To achieve this objective, the Board of Health collaborates with the Cuyahoga County Animal Warden's Society, the Animal Protective League, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Ohio Department of Health, and local veterinarians to discuss and assist in the surveillance of rabies in animal populations. RODENT CONTROL The CCBH investigates complaints from homeowners regarding rodent harborages in their neighborhood. As a service to the residents, our licensed pest control applicators identify breeding sites and areas of rodent harborage and apply rodenticides with the homeowners' permission to eliminate infestations. MOSQUITO CONTROL This program utilizes an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to reduce the potential spread of disease via mosquito populations and other vectors (disease transmitters) in Cuyahoga County. This approach combines the activities of surveillance, biological and chemical control and public education. CCBH strives to use the most environmentally sound control measures in its program to prevent disease transmission. COMMUNITY HOARDING RESPONSE CCBH staff conduct home visits to provide support, advice, and education to individuals who hoard. Additionally the program works with community partners to identify needed resources and develop best practices for dealing with this challenging issue. Health Education Programs PREVENT PREMATURE FATHERHOOD PROGRAM The goal of the Prevent Premature Fatherhood program is to reduce pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections rates among youth in Cuyahoga County. This is achieved by providing facilitated discussions with male youth ages 11-19 in a community setting, schools, churches, and youth centers on topics such as sexually transmitted infection and pregnancy prevention, passages to manhood, social media and masculinity and healthy relationships. TEEN PREGNANCY PREVENTION PROGRAM (TPP) The goal of the TPP program is to delay initiation of sexual activity and thereby prevent teen pregnancy and reduce rates of sexually transmitted infections. The program provides evidence -based comprehensive sexual education curricula in middle and high schools in communities with the highest teen birth rates. UNUSED PRESCIPTION MEDICATION AWARENESS INITIATIVE Rates of unintentional fatal poisoning due to prescription medications have risen over 250% since 1999. The unused prescription medication awareness initiative is a collaborative approach to educating the public on the factors contributing to this new epidemic and informing the public on the proper ways to dispose of unused medications. 4
