Council Minutes of 2-7-2017
Councilman Brossard was recognized. I find it ironic that Councilman Barker talks about
mentoring because there has been no greater mentor on this Council than Paul. When I
was appointed in March of 2009 by virtue of being seated next to Paul he did not once
shy away from mentoring the new guy. To this day, he continues to do that. I see it not
only with myself, but the rest of you on occasion. You've been a tremendous asset to the
City and your residents in Ward Il. I'm proud to call you a friend.
Director Copfer was recognized. Mr. Barker, we have worked long and hard together for
many years. Even when we were both sitting in the audience at times before we had even
gotten involved in city government. I appreciate all you have done on Council and as
Chairman of the Finance Committee when you were on the committee and I worked very
closely with you. I look forward to you being one of our Property Maintenance
Inspectors. You are very passionate about it and I think you will make a difference.
Council President Jones spoke. There is not much I can add to what everyone else has
said. Having the opportunity to serve with you, over the years we've had many
discussions, sometimes with our voices raised. Even though you and I came at this work
from two different places. I think philosophically, we come from different places
politically, different life experiences, but I think that you have shown me how to make a
compromise. The compromise we always came to, was always in the best interests of the
residents. I think that all of our elected officials strive to do that. We are all up here
because we want North Olmsted to continue to be better and there was no one who
exemplified that more than you. So I thank you for your service.
Councilwoman Williamson was recognized. I want to thank you Paul for your guidance,
wisdom, advice and suggestions. Like Councilman Brossard I was appointed and you
stepped in right away to kind of take me under your wing and show me the ropes. You
have been a great friend, I will miss you as being the senior member of this Council, but
thank you for everything.
Councilman Kearney Chairman of the Finance Committee:
The Finance Committee met on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 7:05 p.m. Present were
committee members Kearney and Schumann; Council members Brossard, Hemann and
Limpert; Mayor Kennedy, Law Director Gareau, Assistant Law Director O'Malley and
guests.
Discussed was Resolution 2017-7. A Resolution authorizing the Mayor to enter
into a contract with Mad Bomber Fireworks Productions to provide a fireworks
display for the 2017 North Olmsted Fourth of July Celebration. The Mayor
expects the cost of the fireworks to be around $25,000.00. Last year, $16,000.00
was donated from local businesses. The committee is aware there are added costs
to the celebration with manpower and the like. Both committee members felt the
cost was worth the enjoyment it brings to the community. The committee voted 2-
0 in favor of recommending the Resolution.
Discussed next was Ordinance 2017-8. An Ordinance establishing and fixing the
compensation for the elected officials of the City of North Olmsted for the term of
office commencing January 1, 2018 and ending December 31, 2021. This must be
4
