Council Minutes of 4-4-2017
one subject, its one topic. It's not log rolling. The legislation is in fine form. I
wanted you to know so you should not have any concern if this member of the
community reaches out to you.
• We did receive a ruling in the Raymond Oster case, this is the house we knocked
down last year on Berkshire. We intervened. We asked the court as a city to be
able to participate in the proceedings, because we are owed some money. We
have never been successful in doing that when we've asked in the past and this
time we were. This is the first time we have been able to go to the top of the pile.
We are owed $10,000 and we would like to get our money sooner than later. The
lending institution is probably going to fight it, but we are going to take the
position we are entitled to it.
• Lastly, I want to share a story with you. In my office last week, I received a letter.
It was handwritten from an individual in France. He said he was a nephew of an
individual who lived here on Carriage Lane, right across the street from former
Councilman Paul Barker. He indicated his uncle had died several years ago. He
said his uncle always indicated he would be leaving something for him in his will.
He asked if it was possible to know where to find this answer. I'm guessing in
France the municipality does more in terms of keeping track than here where it is
a county issue. My curiosity got the best of me and I found in fact this guy passed
away and I found a copy of his will. It's online and did not take very long to find.
In fact, he left everything to Hillsdale College in Michigan. That's unfortunate for
the person in France. I pulled up the inventory for his estate. He lived in ranch
house and his estate was worth $11 million dollars and he left none of it to his
nephew who thought he would be receiving something. The moral of the story is
you should reach out to your relatives, send them Christmas cards and perhaps
your neighbors. I thought you'd find that interesting, you never know who is
living next door to you.
Finance Director Copfer:
• The first monthly water/sewer bills hit last week in the mail. We received a good
number of calls. There is a calculation worksheet that is on our website to help
people better understand the change. If someone calls, you can refer them to the
worksheet or have them contact the Finance Department so we can help walk
them through it.
Councilwoman Williamson Chairman of the Streets and Transportation Committee:
The Streets and Transportation Committee met on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 7:11 p.m.
Present were committee members Williamson, Hemann and Limpert; Council members
Brossard, Kearney and Rahm; Council President Jones; Mayor Kennedy and guests.
• Discussed was Resolution 2017-28. A Resolution authorizing the Director of
Public Service to advertise for bids for the purchase of bulk treated rock salt for
ice and snow removal operations as detailed in specifications on file and further
authorizing the Mayor to enter into a contract with the lowest and best bidder,
after Board of Control approval. Mayor Kennedy explained this is for the City's
annual rock salt purchase. The City will only be required to pay for the rock salt
actually used. A motion was made to recommend to all of Council. The
committee voted 3-0 in favor of recommending the Resolution.
2
