well written contract and that we were willing to pursue issues, may have helped
in their decision to reinstate full service. According to Republic, their loss of a
compost site and EPA may have triggered much of their decision making to halt
yard waste collection.
Food Pantry and Senior Center Questions:
1. What is the level of increased use of the food pantry and Senior Center?
PANTRY: Oxcart Pantry has seen an increase in new clients and the return of
former clients. Also, federal guidelines recently changed, increasing qualifying
income levels, making more households eligible for service. So far, we've
registered 23 new families since the beginning of March, much of the increase
has happened in April. We anticipate this number will continue to rise.
2019
March - 146 households
April - 115 households
2020
March - 152 households served
April - 129 households as of 4/21 (estimating another 50+ distributing on
the 22nd and 29th)
SENIOR CENTER: The Senior Center nutrition program has been evolving as
our supply and resources have changed. The first delivery was March 19, which
was a boxed lunch (1 meal). We moved to a frozen meal service (2 meals) the
following week. That will be ending and recipients will be delivered a five-day
supply of shelf stable meals starting next week. Staff has had to continue to
adjust to these changes while dealing with increases in demand. Since meal
delivery began, 40 new seniors have registered for assistance.
3/19 (box lunch) — 30 households
3/24 (start of frozen meals) — 32 households
3/31 — 32 households
4/7 — 40 households (plus produce)
4/14 — 44 households (plus flowers)
4/21 — 47 households
4/28 (start of shelf -stable meals) — 75 meals ordered
2. Has there been an increase in donations of food to the food pantry? The Pantry
has not accepted group or individual donations of food since mid-March out of
caution regarding the spread of infection. instead the Pantry has been purchasing
more goods from the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. Financial donations have
been encouraged in lieu of goods and the community has responded very
generously. Financial donations in March and April 2019 were $600 and $465,
respectively. Financial donations in March and April (to date) 2020 were $1,550
and $1,511 respectively. We implemented an online donation option in November
2019, which has made it easier for those who want to give to contribute.
3. Are there any shortages of supplies? Both the Pantry and Senior Center report
needing to increase their stock of face masks and gloves currently and for the
months ahead.
