MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE COUNCIL <br />OF THE CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />MAY 16, 2023 <br />Present: Council Members Gilchrist, Hemann, Limpert, Madden, Scarl and Williamson. <br />Also Present: Mayor Nicole Dailey Jones and Director of Law Gareau and Director of Finance Copfer, <br />H. R. Director, Economic Director, Safety Director, Service Director and guests. <br />Absent: Council President Brossard and Council Member Glassburn <br />Council President Pro Tempore Williamson called the meeting to order at 8:01 p.m. in Council <br />Chambers, 5200 Dover Center Road, North Olmsted, Ohio. <br />Members of the audience were invited to join Council in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. <br />The Council Meeting Minutes of May 3, 2023 were approved as written. <br />The following legislation was considered for suspension of the rules. On first reading Resolution 2023- <br />65. <br />REPORTS <br />Mayor Jones: <br />• Mayor Jones reported that the North Olmsted Police Department took back 34.75 pounds of <br />unwanted medications during the DEA's Drug Take Back month. The six Westshore police <br />departments including Bay Village, Fairview Park, Lakewood, North Olmsted, Rocky River and <br />Westlake collectively took back a total of 242.65 pounds of medications. <br />• Members of the Northeast Ohio Human Trafficking Task Force on Thursday, May 11, arrested 30 <br />men in connection to a human trafficking sting in North Olmsted. The Ohio Attorney General <br />announced the arrests after a judge in the Lorain County Courts sentenced a man to life in <br />prison for human trafficking. Among the 30 arrested were the former Westlake City School <br />District Superintendent, a middle school teacher and a non-profit executive. Director of Public <br />Safety Jennifer Scofield participated in the one -day Human Trafficking sting, which was one of <br />the largest in the area to date, held in conjunction with the North Olmsted Police Department, <br />Westshore Enforcement Bureau and the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. <br />Mayor Jones congratulated the Police Department for their diligence and hard work. <br />• Mayor Jones announced that President Biden proclaimed May 2023 National Mental Health <br />Awareness Month, and according to a recent CDC report, the number of female high school <br />students seriously considering suicide jumped from 24% in 2019 to 30% in 2021. The <br />percentage of those who made a suicide plan increased from 19.9% to 23.6% in that same time <br />frame, and suicide attempts rose from 11% to 13.3%. The American Academy of Pediatrics and <br />Children's Hospital Association have declared children's mental health a national emergency. <br />
