• Also, over the weekend, our always impressive, annual ice show took place. This event
showcases the incredible talent we have here in North Olmsted. Hundreds of hours go
into preparing for the show, and it is truly one of the City's hidden gems. The dedication
of our skaters and staff never ceases to amaze me.
• 1 also had the pleasure of recently touring progress on the North Olmsted Park with
Councilman Scarl, a couple weeks ago. I'm happy to say everything is progressing nicely.
If any of you would like to tour the park to see the work in progress, please reach out to
Director Pinchek, and he would be happy to give you a tour of the progress.
• As you're aware, we're meeting tonight instead of our usual night because yesterday
was Election Day. Although only one issue appeared on the ballot in North Olmsted, it
was a significant one. I'm pleased to report that Issue 2 passed by a wide margin across
the state. This measure allows the state to issue up to $250 million in bonds annually, an
increase from the current $200 million, to support major infrastructure projects at the
local level. For North Olmsted, that means continued opportunities to apply for critical
funding for roads, bridges, and sewer treatment systems.
• Speaking of State issues, the City continues to monitor the state budget and how that
will affect North Olmsted.
• And finally, just a reminder for all of our Councilmembers to communicate to your
residents that on Memorial Day at 10:30 a.m., the City will host, along with our VFW
here in North Olmsted, our annual tribute to those who have fallen and our
remembrance of them on Memorial Day. That, Mr. President, concludes my report.
Council President Brossard:
Thank you, Mayor. Director of Law Gareau, do you have a report this evening?
Law
Law Director Gareau:
Thank you, Mr. President and Members of Council.
• As I've done in years past, we get an annual update from the Rocky River Municipal
Court about cases that have been prosecuted, and I wanted to bring you an update of
the prosecutions that have taken place in the City of North Olmsted through the Law
Department in the Rocky River Municipal Court for 2024. Misdemeanors and felonies
actually experienced a 9% drop from 2023 to 2024. There were 576 total combined
cases prosecuted in 2024. Of that, there were 175 felony crimes prosecuted last year.
That's actually down from 206 in 2023.
• Drug possession was the most common, with theft and then receiving stolen property,
being the second and third most common criminal prosecutions in the City of North
Olmsted for felonies. Those are the same order of things for 2023 in terms of the type of
crimes being committed. There were 487 misdemeanor crimes prosecuted in 2024,
that's down from 510 in 2023. Again, even with the misdemeanors, theft was the most
common, followed by domestic violence and obstructing justice. The most common the
year before were theft, domestic violence, and possession of criminal tools. Of note,
although theft was the most common each year, prosecutions dropped from 200 to 156,
so there was a 22% decline in cases charged from 2023 to 2024.
