Council President Brossard:
Ordinance 2025-36 is amended by a vote of 6-0.
Council President Brossard:
Councilman Shymske, Chairman of the Public Safety, Health, and Welfare Committee, do you
have a report this evening?
Public Safety, Health & Welfare Committee
Councilman Shymske:
Yes, I do, Mr. President. Thank you. The Public Safety, Health and Welfare Committee met
virtually on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at 8:10 p.m. Those in attendance were Committee
Members Shymske and Madden, Council Members Gilchrist, Limpert, Marrie, and Scarl, Mayor
Jones, all the Directors, the Special Assistant to the Mayor, the Fire Chief, and guests.
• On the agenda was Ordinance 2025-80, an Ordinance amending Section 139.99(a) of
Chapter 139 of the Administrative Code, entitled Department of Public Safety, for the
purpose of adding the position of Assistant Fire Chief to the Division of Fire, and
declaring an emergency. The fire chief spoke on this. This has been a position he has
been championing since he took over in 2013. North Olmsted has not had an Assistant
Fire Chief since budget cuts in 2009. The Chief addressed some concerns regarding how
North Olmsted has lived without this position since 2009 and said it has been
challenging and hurt morale in extending responsibilities without compensation. It
would very much help with administrative duties while also helping with community
outreach while providing motivation, decision making, and problem solving. He noted
that North Olmsted is the largest community in Cuyahoga County without this position,
which was a budget cut again in 2009. The full take-home salary is approximately
$125,000 with an additional $75,000 in health care and pension costs. After some more
spirited discussion, a motion was made to hold Ordinance 2025[-80] in Committee. The
vote was taken one-to-one. It failed to be recommended to anything, so 2025-80 is held
in Public Safety, Health, and Welfare. A motion to adjourn the meeting was made at
8:51 and seconded, and the motion passed 2-0, and that concludes my report.
Council President Brossard:
Thank you, Councilman Marrie, Chairman of the Intra-Governmental Relations Committee, do
you have a report this evening?
Intra-Governmental Relations Committee
Councilman Marrie:
Yes, Mr. President. Thank you. The Intra-Governmental Relations Committee met virtually on
Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at 6:54 p.m. Present were Committee Members Marrie, Gilchrist,
and Shymske, Council Members Scarl, Madden, and Limpert, the Mayor, all Directors, the
Special Assistant to the Mayor, and guests.
• On the agenda was the interview for the appointment of Jen Kalin to the Planning and
Design Commission, she's the Mayor's appointment to the Planning and Design
