` +~ ~
CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
RESOLUTION NO. 91-194
BY.• MAYOR AND ENTIRE COUNCIL
A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE PUBLIC SERVICE OF
COUNCILMAN, THOMAS P. O'GRADY.
WHEREAS, Thomas P. O'Grady served as Ward 2 Councilman for the City of North
Olmsted from January, 1984 until his death on May 27, 1991; and
WHEREAS, the memory of his full and complete life is brought home so much more
during this period of thanksgiving and the joy of this Christmas Season; and
WHEREAS, this Council wishes to pay tribute to Thomas P. O'Grady by setting forth
herein his many accomplishments:
Thomas P. O'Grady lived life to the fullest. He was a proud father of six children. Tom
and his wife, Mary, supplied the love and attention necessary to pass on a legacy to their
children and, ultimately, their grandchildren. He became a central part of the activities of his
family and enjoyed every minute of it.
Another important part of Tom O'Grady's life included, in addition to his family, his
religion. While most of us have a spiritual side, we confine it to perhaps Sunday and other
occasional times. Tom O'Grady believed and practiced his beliefs. It would not be unusual to
see him at daily mass at St. Brendan's Parish where he often assisted the Priest in conducting
the services. He was a Eucharistic Minister who ministered to the sick of the Parish, he was
past president of the Holy Name Society, past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus,
Chairman of the annual dance to benefit the deaf at St. Augustine's Church, and, was a long
time volunteer at Providence House. By all who knew him, he will always be remembered as
one who actually fed the hungry, clothed the naked, buried the dead and visited the sick.
Tom O'Grady, in addition to being a good husband, father and spiritual person, was a
politician. Although he tackled politics like other aspects of his life, he viewed public service
in a positive way. As a Councilman for Ward 2 he always worked for the people of his Ward.
While working to fullest, on behalf of his constituents, he would never compromise his
principles simply to attract votes for the next election. He called it the way he saw it. In his
own modest way and, not in a global or national sense, he could easily qualify locally as a
~~
model subject for "Profiles in Courage. It was never a question of undue pressure, but rather,
his perception of what was the morally right thing to do.
Tom O'Grady had a quick Irish wit that often came out on the floor of Council. Tom
was fun to be with. He was cooperative but, at the same time, persistent, even tempered but,
at times, impatient and lastly, politically loyal and, at the same time, politically independent.
