1329.05 (3) The area of permanent window and door signs. (bi Whenever the gross area of the signs are related to the size of the building or lot: Tile frontage of a building shall be the width of the facade ef the building, business, office, or industrial unit which faces the principal street, or the faca'de c'.ontai~g,~ the main en%rance of a business office, or i~dustri a~ building. (c) Buildings or lots having fro~)tage on a second street or a secondary e~rance to a parking area may be permitted addit(onal signs along such secondary streets which shall, however, not exceed {25} percent of.the area of the signs pemitted along the main facades. DESIGN STANDARDS. Signs, as permitted in all use districts, shall be designed to be compatible in character and style with regard to materials, color and size of the building, other signs designed or located on the same building, and other signs on adjoining buildings in order ltd produce an overall unified effect, and in accordance with the standards set forth in this section. Signs will be reviewed with respect to each of the provisions of this section and will require approval by the Board of Building Standards. (a) Continuity. Signs shall be considered in relationship tO their surrounding environment and, if seen in series, should have a continuity of design. (bi Style and Color. The style of a sign shall be generally consistent throughout the particular building or block involved; the color of signs shall be a component of the color of the building facade and the total number of colors on a sign shall be limited to four. (c) Letterin9. The lettering on a sign shall be large enough to be easily read, but not overly large or out of scale with the building upon which it is placed. An excessive amount of information on signs, where visual clutter could create a potential safety hazard to motohists or pedestrians, shall not be permitted. (d) Materials. Signs shall be fabricated on and of materials which are of good quality, good durability and c~plementary to the building of which they become part. When non- combustible outdoor signs or display structures are required by this Code, all parts including the supporting structure shall be of noncm~bustible material; provided, however, that wood, approved plaster, or other material not more ce~bustible than wood or approved plastic shall be pen~itted in the following locations: For small ornamental moldings, cappings, nailing strips, individual letters, symbols, figures and insignia. the face of a sign, p~-ovided that the aggregate ar~a of such facing for any sign shall not exceed square feet.
