(b) When bedroom or sleeping areas are not fully enclosed or <br />separated from other living areas within a living or sleeping <br />unit, the smoke detector shall be installed nearest the area <br />designated for sleeping. <br /> <br />(c) Alarm signaling devices shall be clearlY audible in all <br />bedrooms within the dwelling, apartment and condominium unit, <br />when all intervening doors are closed. When more than one <br />sleeping rooms occurs within a dormitory or dwelling unit, one <br />detector may serve more than one room provided that the required <br />exits from such sleeping' rooms are in a s~ngle private corridor <br />within fifteen (15) feet of the detector. <br /> <br />1331.03. ALTERNATE. <br /> <br />'As an alternate to self-contained smoke detectors, an <br />approved fire detection system may be installed. Each fire <br />detection system must be indiVidually approved by the Fire <br />Chief. <br /> <br />1331.04 EQUIPMENT AND INSTALLATION. <br /> <br />(a) All devices, combinations of devices, and equipment required <br />herein are to be installed in conformance with the Building <br />Codes adopted by the City of Lakewood and this Section <br />and must be of a type approved by the Fire Chief. For the purpose <br />of installation and maintenance only, the applicable sections <br />of the NFPA "Standard for the Installation, Maintenance, and <br />Use of Household Fire Warning Equipment," NFPA No. 74-1980, <br />shall be considered accepted engineering practice. <br />(b) In new residential buildings, smoke detector~ shall be <br />wired directly (hard-wired) to the building's power supply. <br />In existing one family, two family, and multiple family dwellings, <br />it is preferred that smoke detectors be wired directly to the <br />power supply; however, said detetors may be powered by self- <br />monitored battery or operated in a plug-in outlet which is <br />fitted with a plug restraining device, provided the outlet is <br />not controlled by any switch other than the main power supply. <br /> <br />1331.05 CERTIFICATION OF CHANGE IN OCCUPANCY. <br /> <br />(a) After September l, 1982, at every change in occupancy of <br />every residential rental unit occasioned by or incidental to <br />a sale, lease, or sublease of said unit, it shall be the duty <br />of the grantor thereof (i.e., the seller, lessor, or sublessor <br />as the case may be) to certify in writing, before occupancy, <br />to the new occupant that all smoke detectors as required by <br />this Chapter (ar other applicable laws) are installed and in <br />the proper condition. Upon receipt of such certification, it <br />shall be the duty of the occupant to maintain all self-contained <br />smoke detectors in good working order. <br /> <br />(b) Failure to comply with this subsection shall be punish- <br />able as set forth herein, provided, however, that this sub- <br />section shall not be construed to vitiate or render void any <br />contract, lease, or sublease subject hereto. <br /> <br />1331.06 PERMITS AND FEES. <br /> <br />No smoke detector or alternative system shall be directly <br />connected (permanently wired).to the electrical system of <br />the structure unless an electrical permit shall have been first <br />been obtained from the Building Department and any <br />applicable fee paid. <br /> <br /> <br />
