Mr. Parmelee reviewed 2021 accomplishments of the department. Building & Housing worked <br /> with GIS to develop an interactive real time housing survey map that shows how the housing <br /> stock has changed in the city over the years. The department also completed its citywide housing <br /> survey in record time, 3 �/z weeks. The data will show changes in the housing stock from 2012 to <br /> 2021. Correction notices will be issued in the first quarter of 2022 for homes rated 3 or 4. Lastly, <br /> Building & Housing reviewed larger developments that had ground breakings this past year and <br /> inspected every high rise in the Gold Coast after the Oceanside Florida building failure. Few <br /> structural deviations were found, with minor issues such as deteriorating concrete and exposed <br /> rebar. Staff is working with building management on all Gold Coast property issues. <br /> Mr. Parmelee spoke about the Building & Housing Department's goals for 2022. He is looking <br /> to implement a residential plan review fee starting January 2022. The department is in the <br /> process of developing a commercial property survey similar to the tri-annual housing survey, <br /> with expected roll out to take place in fall of 2022. Other projects such as digitization of records <br /> and establishing a commercial building inspector position remain on the horizon. Commissioner <br /> Parmelee is looking to reorganize staff to facilitate more promotion from within the department. <br /> Councilmembers and the Commissioner discussed staffing and departmental structure. Mr. <br /> Parmelee stated that he is not looking to add to the head count in the department. He added that <br /> his staff does a great job handling a substantial workload. Councilmembers complimented the <br /> department for all its hard work and forward thinking. They also spoke to the importance of <br /> working with the Court to ensure compliance with the building code, which Mr. Parmelee agreed <br /> was important. <br /> Fire Department <br /> Fire Chief Dunphy <br /> Nick Samb ula,IAFF Local 382 <br /> Chief Dunphy asked for a moment to acknowledge the loss of life during the recent Midwest <br /> tornados. He assured Council that LFD would be prepared to respond to such a disaster as a <br /> result of its training, which is supported by the budget. <br /> Chief Dunphy summarized the organization of the department. It has three fire houses and 90 <br /> firefighters, including one female firefighter, who is the city's first. There are 28 firefighters <br /> working each shift and the department has 6 administrative staff. <br /> Chief Dunphy discussed the department's 2021 accomplishments which included: <br /> • A new ambulance at Station 43 <br /> • Creation of three new departmental awards to boost morale <br /> • Proactively worked to spread the message of fire prevention in schools <br /> Chief Dunphy provided an update on the renovation at Fire Station 42 and how upon completion, <br /> it will significantly reduce exposure to carcinogens for the firefighters. He noted that over the <br /> past five years, a number of firefighters at the station have passed away from cancer. He hopes <br /> 3 <br />
