abortions would assuredly most endanger black women, women of color, non-
binary people and trans women.
In addition to being a constitutionally protected right, abortion is a critical part
of comprehensive reproductive care in any community. Unfortunately, four
Ohio municipalities have attempted to restrict this important healthcare, which
is why we feel it is important for this council to express our continuing and firm
belief that access to the full spectrum of reproductive health care, including
abortion, is an essential human right that promotes reproductive health, mental
health, economic justice and equality.
In 2019, Lakewood City Council adopted legislation to publicly oppose the
State of Ohio's six-week abortion ban and updated the Codified Ordinances to
remove outmoded and unenforced passages from 1977 that attempted to restrict
abortions within city limits. The following Resolution condemns attempts at any
and all levels of government to take us backward, and opposes any barriers,
bans or restrictions to safe and legal abortion.
We respectfully ask for your support of this Resolution tonight.
Councilmember Rader remarked further on the topic and the motivation for the proposed
legislation, stating that it is critically important that Council lend its voice on this important
issue. He expressed concern about Roe v. Wade standing in the balance and the longstanding
attempts to chip away at it. He encouraged all councilmembers to join in support.
Motion by President O'Malley and seconded to receive and file the communication. All
members voted in favor. Motion passed.
28. RESOLUTION 2021-56 - A RESOLUTION to oppose and condemn attacks on abortion
access from federal, state, and local entities and to assure residents that Lakewood City
Council will fight to preserve and protect abortion rights within the City of Lakewood,
within the limits of the law.
