Page 9.

The following suggestions will aid the auxiliary Policeman in his re-
lations with fellow policemen and the public.
1. Courtesy among police officers is indispensable to discipline.
Respect to superior officers should not be confined to obedience
on duty, but should extend to all occasions.
2. Be careful not to make a positive statement on a subject on which
you are not informed. There is always the risk of making embaras-
sing mistakes. trti'Jhen in doubt, keep still'?, generally speaking is
a good rule in conversation.
3. Refrain from discussing politics or religion while on duty.
t,.. Learn to take constructive criticism without justifying yourself.
It is a good way to learn what people think is wrong with you.
5. A lack of interest in what one is being told is a breach of cour-
tesy. Do not allow your attention to wander while another person
is speaking to you.
6. Face squarely forward, and look into the countenance of the person
to whom you are speaking.
7. Give information in a spirit of cheerful willingness and with a
desire to be helpful.
$. Ignore slight affronts in the demeanor of those with whom you
come in contact, unless such affronts amount to insults.
g. Be strictly punctual at all engagements, whether business or
social.
10. Preface your request by a ~Srief explanation, such as, "Sir", or
whatever the case may be.
11. Never engage in long sidewalk or curbstone conversations.
12. Do not lean against a lamp post or building, or assume a loafing
position or attitude.
13. Never make personalities the theme of your conversation.
14. A'fake an honest effort to acquire such knowledge as will enable
you to answer promptly all questions that will inevitably be ask-
ed of you.
a 15. To carry a request over the head of your superior is a manifesta-
tion of disrespect or ignorance.
16. The policeman should refrain from making "wise cracks" and sharp
retorts regardless of the occasion.
