Befcre laying the pipe, the bottom of the tz•ench shall b e dug below €rade and then brought to the grade of the pipe in the foll.ovring manner: A four (l.~) inch layer of crushed lime stone shall. be placed on the entire ~^r_~_dth of the bottom of the trench, folloyaed by a fillei of hydrated lime ?nd a layer of three (3) inches of sand, ~i'he crushed lime stone sha]_1 be yell graded from fine to coarse, and free from s]_a.g, cirlclers, ashes, rubbish or other objectionable material. The baclfill around and to the depth of 3 inches above the top of the pipe shall ba made with sand. The Contractor must use special care in placing this portion of the backfill so as ~to avoid injuring or moving the pipe lchen compacting same. On top of the sand the Contractor shall place an:~ther layer of crushed lime stone five (5) inches tlii ck o n the entire ~°i dth of the trench. On top of the comnacted layer of lime stone hydrated lime shall b e then applied in the amount of. 3/li of a pound nez• square foot of trench. The remaining baclffill sha]_l be made z~~rith sand, care- fully placed and corripacted by tamping, puddling, or rolling. All pre- cautions shall be taken to eliminate future settlement.
