(b) LAYING TIC PIPE: lvhere necessary to deflect pipe from a
straigrit li ne, either vertical or horizontal, tl"ie degree of deflection
shall be approved by the Engineer, lrhenever it is necessary to cut pipe
this shall be done in a neat and worlffnanlike manner without daniage to the
pipe, leaving the end. smooth and at right angles to the axis of pipe. 1`To
payment 1:~i11 be made for the portion of the pipe cut off and not used in
the line. At times tivhei-i pipe laying is not iii progress the open ends
shall be closed by approved means and no trench water shall be permitted
'to enter the pipe. ~ .
(c) V~LRIATIOn?S Iii DII~:%?~S:i 0i`d5 ; The outside diameter of the spigot
end of Uell-and-spigot pipe ,varies 1~~ith the type, size, and class of
pipe. There is only one joir_t size for each diameter of mechanical-
joint pipe. Thus, difficulty may be met tivhen attempts are made to
connect existing bell-and-spigot lines to mechanical-joint pipe. ?Then
such a connection must be made, an adapter having a fitting bell and a
mechaiical-joint socket is manufactured and may be rzsed.:;
%;If 'the existingline ends in a spigot, either a standard sleeve or a
special fitting consisting of a bell and. mec~lanica~_•- ~~oi~z~~ soclc~, inay be
used, provided that the fitting betvreen the sp~.got end of the existing
line and the bell to be conr:ected to it is consistent with the normal
fit o f bell-and-spigot pipe .
(d) CLi?=11~?IidG ~a i~?) i1SSF~_ ~'LIi~G JOI1?T : The last S in. outside of the
spigot and inside of the bell of rnecrianica.l-joint p~_pe shall be thorough-
ly cleaned to remove oil, grit, tar (other than standard coating), and
other foreign matter from the joint, and then painted. vrith a soap solu-
tion made by dissolving one-half cup of granulated soap in 1 gallon of
water. All nuts shall
be tightened z~rith a suitable (preferably torque-limiting) rmench. The
torque :eor various sizes of bolts shall be as follows:
Size Range of Torque
ii1. e ft.-1.b.
5/8 40- 60
3/4 60- 90
1 70-10U
1--1/!~ ;'G-120
Alats spaced 1&U deb?°ees apart shall be tightened alternately in order
to produce an equal pressure on all parts of the Eland.
