Mayfield Village public and private school enrollment
projections are given in Chapter II. Total public enrollment,
grades K-12, is expected to increase from 325 pupils in 1990, to
440 by the year 2010. Thus, assuming the School District's
current -ratio of 25 pupils per classroom, a need for up to five
classrooms may be generated by the Village. Although this need
should be related to the School District's overall plans, it
does not suggest that a new elementary, or a significant number
of additional classrooms, will be needed in the Village in the
near future.
Similarly, projected private school enrollments, grades K-
12, do not indicate that construction of a parochial school for
Mayfield Village pupils would be feasible .. Thus, pursuant to
Ohio law, the provision of transportation of private pupils by
Mayfield School District probably will continue. On the other
hand, projections of nursery school pupils imply that at least
one such facility should be considered. Its preferable location
would be in Mayfield Center because of its general
accessibility.
RECREATION
The only Village-owned recreation facility is a 3.5-acre
playground on SOM Center Road north of Beta Drive. That is,
based on the Village's ultimate population of 4,000, less than
one acre per 1,000 residents has been allocated by the Village
itself for recreation. A ratio of at least 15 acres is
recommended. Therefore, a recreation system which embraces
school sites, Cleveland Metropark land and private open space is
essential.
A viable recreation system should include the following
kinds of facilities.
Playgrounds: These facilities are designed to serve children up
to 15 years old, residing in neighborhoods extending
approximately one-half mile around each playground. At least
1.5 acres per 1,000 residents should be provided; and each
playground should include:
- A preschool area with apparatus, sand boxes, benches and
lawn areas with shade trees; -
- An apparatus area for older children;
- Court areas for volleyball, basketball and tennis;
- Playing fields for soccer, football and softball; and
- A shelter with toilets, drinking fountain and space for
handicrafts, dramatics and music (If the playground is on
a school site, such facilities are usually provided in
the school building).
18
