Whenever possible, school sites should be used for
playgrounds. In Mayfield Village, Center Elementary's site
currently functions as a playground. Thus, in concert with the
aforementioned Village-owned playground on SOM Center Road, two
playgrounds with a total of 7.0 acres, or 1.8 acres per 1,000
ultimate Village residents, are available. However, because of
the community's configuration, a third playground near Lander
Road and Ridgebury Boulevard on Mayfield High School's site
should be considered as a plan option.
Recreation Fields: These facilities are intended to meet the
active recreation needs of children over 15 years old and adults
requiring more space than at playgrounds. Their service areas
are more extensive, and at least 2.5 acres per 1,000 residents
should be provided. Each recreation field should include:
- Playing fields for baseball, softball, football, soccer
and field hockey;
- Court areas for tennis, volleyball and basketball;
- A field house with toilets, dressing rooms and showers
(If the recreation field is on a school site, such
facilities are normally provided in the school building);
and
- Parking areas and spectator seating.
Based on Mayfield Village's ultimate population, the single
recreation field at Mayfield High School can adequately serve
the Village. There is also the potential for the creation of a
new more centrally located recreation field northwest of the
Village's existing playground on SOM Center Road.
Parks: Supplemental to playgrounds and recreation fields which
offer active recreation opportunities, there is a need for
larger parks that provide for the more passive recreation of all
the people. At least 10 acres of park land per 1,000 residents
should be made available. Woods, meadows and stream valleys
should dominate. Facilities for fishing, swimming, picnicking
and winter sports should be integrated with its natural
characteristics, and secluded areas may be used for day camps,
zoological gardens, bird sanctuaries, arboretums or other
appropriate features. Paths for hiking and bicycling connected
with the centers of greatest use, shelters and parking areas
should be included, but roads should be kept to a minimum.
With 590 acres already set aside in Cleveland Metropark
District's North Chagrin Reservation, Mayfield Village will
clearly have an adequate amount of park land when the community
is fully developed.
19
