106
Special Council Meeting
4/10/94
Page Four
tremendous in terms of snow plowing and garbage pick-up and all those things that we
pay higher taxes for. But I thought that we had some fundamental rights here which
are that we would live in a safe community where our children and our parents and our
neighbors and our friends could take advantage of conveniences that are within miles of
our home. My parents live on Highland Road. My mother is a stroke victim; at any
time she could lose her life. I would hate to think that I couldn't turn left to go to
Wilson Mills, and I would have to go to White Road which could be an extra 15-20
minutes depending on the time of day or the traffic. So when I think of all these things
going on in my life and the stresses that my neighbors are under, I don't think that you
can place an economic premium on that. I would like to suggest that with all the mental
horsepower in this room, I would like to think that we could come up with an attractive
alternative that meets our needs.
Dino Marino, 6807 Bramblewood, said the detour is confusing. I wonder if someone
from out of town came to visit me, how they would get around--there is no signs. Mr.
Marino said we all have the freedom to express our opinion. Ninety percent of the
people are in favor of Mr. Russo who we asked to be our spokesman. He said "we" does
not mean all, "we" means the majority. Mr. Marino asked who is in favor of a change of
plans.
Eunice Kalina, 469 Blueberry Circle, said I think perhaps there are many people who do
not object to the administration's proposal, however, we did not see fit to organize such
a deluge of illegal mail. In case some of you don't know, it is illegal to put mail in
someone's post box without going through the U.S. Mail. I think the literature that has
come out has been filled with lies, half truths, innuendoes, omissions, to say nothing of
the threats I have received on the phone. I learned of the meeting last week by a
member of this so-called opposition who called and told me about the meeting. So I
came; I voiced my opinion and the next morning received a phone call threatening me
not to come to the next meeting. As for Mayor Rinker, I believe he has bent over
backwards to be accommodating, to be fair; this meeting was supposed to have taken
place last Monday at Council Caucus. When Mr. Russo said that would conflict with
his vacation plans, Mayor Rinker said fine, we will set the meeting for when you are
back in town. I can't think of too many people who would do that. I think he has been
done a great disservice by the literature that has come out. I don't think that this shows
a lack of cooperation; I think he has been very cooperative and has tried to listen to both
sides. Just because he had said he does not go along with the plan that is being offered,
is not exactly a reason to say that he is not being cooperative. The literature which came
out never supplied specific information relevant to the issues. The $37,000--I did not see
that written, did you? It was like this was found money. It wasn't found money; it was
reflected, it was anticipated. It will serve to improve the intersection which we will all
benefit from. It is sixty days of inconvenience. The other way we have a more minor
