__ L ?1 ?.
' . . ..' ? . , .?'?..
10/
Special Council Meeting
4/10/94
Page Five
inconvenience which will last 75 to 90 days and cost $37,000. Don't you think this
Village has better places to spend $37,000? I think the driving time was exaggerated.
Frank Russo Hickory Hill Drive, said by being here the last 10 or 15 minutes it seems as
if it is a little bit of a chaos of an argument and people are not working together. We all
CO live in Mayfield Village and we all want this to work. You can see that almost one-
? fourth of the city is here tonight. You can see that it is a problem. There are a few
people who agree it should be done this way and the majority of the people feel it
Q should be done that way. Your constituents in the Village are about 2,000 people. I
z represent about 1.3 million people. If I had this many people in the room telling me that
? I was doing something that would disturb them or something that would make their
lives miserable, or make the safety of their families a little bit questionable, I wouldn't
even give a second thought to helping the people in this room. Something has got to be
done to keep Highland Road open and I think you can. If it's going to cost just a little
extra, it may just save one life. So I think we should close the meeting, I think Bruce and
Council members should vote to keep Highland Road open. Let's all work it out to
keep Highland Road open. It it's going to cost a little more, it will save one life. Why
don't you get up and tell us that, Mayor.
Cathv Craine 531 S.O.M. Center Road, said I probably have the newest Village resident
right here. I have two months more to go. I would like to address the safety issue. My
address is smack dab in the 1,000 feet of construction. I made a videotape of the cars
going the wrong way. My children play on the bike path. Unfortunately, just after I got
done videotaping, two cars went down the bike path and turfed the neighbor's lawn. It
is a good thing my kids weren't out there playing. The police department has done a
great job, but this is what happens when the police are not there--after 6 p.m. and on
weekends. Whatever plan is enacted, I am want better police protection.
Mrs. Cinco said"this is a safety issue--going the wrong way, using the bike path. This
decision has been very hard for the Mayor. He has discussed this at length with all
resources from the day we were made aware of what the project would entail. He hasn't
left anyone out. He has talked to the safety forces, the contractor, the engineer; he has
brought in a traffic consultant. To think that this was a quick decision; it was not. All of
Council has had ears bent. It is a great concern. We want to see this project done. We
want to see it done as quickly as possible for just those reasons that Mrs. Craine pointed
out. It is a collective decision and it hasn't been taken lightly. I have spent a lot of time
on the phone this week with Mr. Fixler, with Mayor Rinker and with Mr. Russo and all
of Council concerning cost but most of all concerning safety, concerning that
' intersection and getting it done as safely and as quickly as possible. We feel there are
some other aspects we want to look at. We would like to initiate some control
management at that intersection dealing with possible funding of overtime hours to
