162
Regular Council Meeting
6/20/94
Page Two
Vince Lombardo, 6466 Chase Drive, said he would like to address the Progressive sign.
He said when no leaves were on the trees they had a better view of the sign. Now that
the leaves are on trees, they put up the sign. Every letter will be illuminated. There are
a lot of letters in the word "Progressive." Mr. Lombardo said he has not found one
person who is enthusiastic about the sign. He does not believe the sign was on the
drawing board when they were given approval for the building, so he does not believe
as a Village we have a responsibility to honor that sign. Mr. Lombardo said he thinks if
they want to put a sign up that is not illuminated, that would be fine. He does not see where the sign will do them any good in the evening anyway. One suggestion he has: .
if they want to provide a service for the Village, since the noise situation has gotten '
worse since the trees have been removed from the median strip, they could kill two
birds with one stone--they could erect a nice sound barrier along 271 which would
deaden the noise which would block out their sign.
Mayor Rinker asked Mr. Lombardo approximately how many people he has talked to.
Mr. Lombardo said about five.
Mayor Rinker said he is glad they brought this to our attention. In response to
Progressive's request for a variance to erect this sign, we thought it would make sense
to put it up to test the waters. We believed that it would look "like a beacon in the
night" it would be up so high. The intention was to generate some response from the
neighborhood; he is not surprised at the response.
Mr. Lombardo said it was up one night which was a night worse that it is tonight. The
people he talked to were mainly on Chase Drive and Foxboro. He has not talked to
anybody on Beechers Brook; they are probably the ones who are most affected.
Mrs. Cinco said she was in the back yards of the homes on Beechers Brook. The trees
blocked it but the blue letter was there. She said "Progressive Sign" is on the agenda
tonight.
Joe Cuccarese, 6450 Foxboro Drive, said he thinks the sign is the most ridiculous thing
even being considered. He cannot think of a building like the Illuminating Company,
East Ohio Gas--do they have a sign on their building? Why are we even considering
this? He has been in construction for 15 years; he has built buildings from New York to
Los Angeles. He has never had a request to put a sign on top of a building.
Mayor Rinker said to answer the question why it is being considered; it is because it is a
procedure they are allowed to follow.
