3. Hose Bed requirements:
The Emergency One truck would allow us to carry 1600 feet of 4 inch supply
hose. The Pierce would only allow for 1000 feet of supply hose. The E-One
allows for the hose to play out freely from the rear of the truck. The Pierce
design mandates that hose come off the truck in a hose tray. Neighboring fire
departments have had problems with supply hose jamming with this fype of
truck design.
4. Length of the vehicle
The E- One ladder truck fits into our present station. This truck is 37 feet long
and has 360 cubic feet of compartmentation. The Pierce Ladder would fit into
our station on a chassis that does not meet our requirements. The solution to
fitting the Pierce truck into our station would be to reduce the number of
compartments, thus reducing the length of the apparatus and unforiunately, the
cubic footage of storage space. This idea is unacceptable.
The Sutphen Company also manufactures a ladder truck. The design of this
truck will not allow it to fit into our station, therefore, fheir sales representative
has not been approached by us to bid on this truck.
5. Aluminum versus steel:
Probably the biggest factor favoring the Emergency One is that this truck is 100%
aluminum. Both the truck body and ladder itself are consixucted out of
aluminum. A major reason the E-One meets the Federal Department of
Transportation weight distribution requirements is that aluminum is lighter and
does not have the corrosion problems presented by steel. Both Pierce and L.T.I.
use steel ladders on aluminum truck bodies.
6. Specifications
I am recommending the Emergency One for one additional reason. The E-One
meets our requirements without having to compromise. Whether it is the size of
the water tank, the amount of hose the truck can carry, the weight of the truck or
the size of the axles and brakes the Emergency One does not compromise what
WE want.
