Regular Council Meeting
8/16/94
Page Seventeen
A couple of residents in the audience agreed.
Mr. Chokel said Progressive pays $225,000 a year in income tax to the city. The
incremental income tax coming in is estimated at $600,000 per year; real estate taxes
exceed $23,000. When we got the tax abatement, the schools said to Mayfield Village,
we want some money (for the schools.) Mr. Chokel said his understanding was that the
city and the school have never concluded on that point. We went to the school and said
we will donate free printing and use of our training facilities. The first year (1992), we
voluntarily gave the schools $93,000 in services. In 1993, we are exceeding $100,000.
That is what made us think that if we are donating almost a million dollars a year (to
the schools and the city) that we could come to the county and the city to ask for the
infrastruciure help.
Mrs. Mikula said they are iwo separate items. What you are doing for the schools is
wonderful. That goes to 4 communities. We still have an indebtedness of $400,000 plus
the interest we will have to continue to pay for a fire engine. If you are such good
neighbor, why don't you say "we screwed up." It is very convenient to come back to the
well. Why didn't you make our whole presentation at one time. You are not giving a
million dollars to Mayfield Village to do with as we wish, how we wish, no strings
attached. You are only doing what you have to do by law. Initially, Progressive was
supposed to put up a traffic light to the tune of $18,000 at Progressive's expense years
ago. You never put it up. Put that into something now. I personally think it was bad
deliberately bad planning that you did not make the whole presentation because I don
think you would have been as readily accepted with your addition et cetera.
Mr. Chokel said Progressive does not need that fire engine to fight fires at the new
location we are building. He thinks the Chief would support that fire could be fought
from the systems we put into the building without the high ladder. We the residents
were told we needed it.
or
't
A resident said she was never told that; this is the first she is hearing about it tonight.
Mrs. Basconi said she happened to attend a meeting here in December under Mayor
Carmen's term and Progressive did say they would pay a portion. of the cost of a new
fire engine. Residents are aware that statement was made. She does not blame
Progressive, she blames the people up there for not getting the check in their hand
before they purchased that $400,000 fire engine. We don't need it; this is a small
community.
